I want to take up lomg range shooting and will have a chance to shoot up to 800 yards this summer at Winona. I already have 3 M1A's but i want to get a bolt action rifle in 308. I am thinking of either the Tikka T-3 tactical or the Sako TRG-42. What do the members think would be the best way to go, if price is not a consideration.
thanks in advance for your thoughts

There's another thread, tikka vs sako elsewhere on the forums. Last I saw, the opinion was 100% in favour of the Sako.

But remember, expensive equipment does not make the marksman. If you're just getting into it, I'd suggest spending not so much on the rifle (the cheapest remington 700 goes for ~$500, and should do MOA or better with handloads), and a lot more on ammo and practise.

You might consider a custom built rifle.

You could have a very decent rifle for less than 2,000$. Mine built on a remington action with a 308 guillard barrel shoots a quarter of a minute with handloads.

At Winona you would probably be shooting F class, which means no muzzle brake. Hopefully you are considering the 300 WM and not the 338 LM which are the 2 calibers offered for the TRG42. I have seen the TRG22 on the long range line, and it does very well with an excellent shooter behind the rifle.

Hi iscbill,

I would suggest waiting until after the first Winona date (provided that it's our group you're shooting with:D ) There will be a full range of rifles (Remington, Savage, Tikka, etc, etc) and a huge variety of optics as well. All of the guys are more than willing to let you try them out. From that, you should be able to decide what will be right for you. I started out with a Savage in 308 with a Bushnell Banner scope (for under $1000) and trust me when I say you'll still be able to do head shots at 800 yards with that setup. As prosper said, you'd likely do better to put the extra cash into ammo and practice. Cheers, glocker

Right now Winona Range is limited to no greater than 147gr ball ammo. As a result the first match has been moved to Kingston, so that TR rifle 155 MK's can be shot.

If Winona is going to be your primary range, better consider a 6BR or 6.5 of some sort, (bullet weights less than 147gr) unless or until, this is sorted.

thanks for the info so far

I have read your comments to date and want to thank all of you for your answers. Winona is not going to be my primary range as i generally shoot at ISC. But I am thinking of joining ORA to be able to shoot at Barrie and other clubs. I will not be getting a bolt action right away, and I will probably ask to try some of the rifles that show up at Winona this summer. I will definitely be using my M1A to start with. One of my friends said he is getting a Tikka, so maybe he will let me try it out
Thanks
