I think I need a 17 HMR

when I had my 17hmr I used it on some magpies that were terrorizing all the other birds on my place, worked quite well, big exposion of feathers, all shots were under 100 yds though. I figured those little 17gr bullets shot upwards would lose all of there energy before hitting the ground in the event of a miss, come to think of it I didn't miss any though. I shot a couple of pigeons that had decided my qounset was their new home, the 204 worked well for that.
Geez gatehouse, since when do we need an excuse to buy a new rifle/caliber?? Dedicated crow rifle, ya right!!:p

I like the 17M2 round - it is a wonder that it hasn't caught on - flat shooting same terminal effects as the 17HMR for half the cost. If you don't have a hornet, you really should get one. I would recommend this:

1x Ruger 77/17 Pepper Laminate Target Grey with matching Leupold Scope 4.5-14x40 AO

1x Ruger 77/22 Hornet Walnut Blued with matching Leupold Scope 3.5-10x40 or maybe even 4-12x40mm AO

Now you are totally covered...

If you have issues changing the mags on the savage, i have some bad news for you. Its not the gun. You aint none to handy with your hands. I have had a couple guys try my savage and could not operate it. Cant do nothing but laugh at them. They just ram it in without sliding it on the rail and wonder why it wont feed:HR: So for people that cant figure out things like that. For sure spend the extra or buy some mechanical aptitude

Ah, the internet....
If I 'ain't none toO handy with' my hands and need to 'buy some mechanical aptitude' I just can't quite figure out how I made so much money over the years selling my hands' handywork or how and why I have that red seal on the back of my mechanics licence. The problem here isn't putting it 'on the rail', its the ####ty job Savage has done once the mag slides further in. I can't speak for all their rifles obviously, but on mine it binds consistently if not held to one side nearing lockup. I personally think its bull#### and poor design or build to have to jiggle or manipulate a mag 'just so' to get it locked in place. There is no reason to have obstructions or a lack of guides.

after going back to check how the thread was actually started ......... instant flashback of the old art linkletter " kids will say the darnedest things"

personal experence has the cci tnt 17gr at the top of the what to buy list imho. seems to have more snap/energy than the others.... this said i've heard that hornady makes them all. where i shoot squeeks the farmers want eradication 'one guy lost 60 acer of canola'. the long shots with polly tips seem to deflect if not a solid hit where the hp's seem to pull into the live target. inside 150 yd's it doesn't seem to matter.

.....

Kids may say the darndest things, but Wiki won't always back them up:

"CCI Ammunition loads all of the .17 HMR ammunition for the CCI, Federal Cartridge, Hornady, and Remington brands. However, the ammunition is loaded with different bullets to different specifications.[4] Ammunition is also available from Winchester, PMC and Sellier & Bellot." -Wikipedia

edit to add:
Are you seriously suggesting little furry critters' hair or skin is deflecting polymer tipped bullets? What are they wearing?

thanks for the correction

:)

i'm suggestin that my counted kills "dead or see red before they crawel down the hole" go up when i use tnt hp compared to nylon tips at ranges over 150yd

I have to also vote for the .17M2-thanks to clay at prophit firearms it's 1/3 the price of HMR for ammo with not much difference on gophers except for having to adjust up a bit over 130-150m-I consider it to be more challenging. I had a savage in HMR-buddy has it now and laments over the ammo prices.....but then he doesn't deal with 400+gopher days like i do at the in-laws.

Gatehaus, I had a M2 for a while. Was vere accurate and quite effective on rabbits, grouse, even beaver. The cost of ammo was high and it was VERY loud compared to it's .22cal brother. I might buy one again... Maybe

If you thought that the cost of 17mach2 ammunition was high, you really wouldn't like the price of 17HMR ammunition, at twice the cost. The 17HMR,is also noticeably louder than the 17Mach2.

In my opinion, I think .17HMR is relatively cheap......50 rounds for $15 as
compared to 20 rounds for $50 for factory match centerfire ammo. I re-load for my .223 for anything between 150-300 yards but 0-150 I think the HMR will be great, just buy ammo and shoot. If I truly want to do heavy volume shooting for close range the .22lr will come out.
I just bought 7 boxes of different 17g/20g ammo and will be going out to test which .17HMR ammo will be the most accurate at 50/100yards. I am curious which one will work best for the Volquartsen??:)

yes, this is fact. but I was comparing the 17M2 to the .22LR :)

for me, I found a well placed CCI velociter or MiniMag HP did everything I needed, so I sold my 17.

I would recommend seriously checking out the 17 Remington Fireball. I had an HMR and wasn't totally impressed with it. You should be able to nail crows at 300+ yards (if you are a good shot and it's a calm day) with the Fireball and it's a fairly quiet round. The cost to reload is about the same as buying 17HMR ammo. Maybe a little cheaper. Here's a pic of a couple of my reloads with one sitting on a quarter for size comparison.

It's also known as an inherently accurate round. I shot this 5 round group (during some load development) at 100 yards and I'm far from the greatest shot.

They are also smoking fast. I'm going to test the Chrony one of these days just to be sure it's totally accurate. This reading is about 200fps more than what the factory loads clock in at. (For the record I wasn't shooting down the road, it's just the angle of the pic that makes it look that way.)

If you are considering getting into any small center fire caliber I would recommend heading over to Saubier.com and checking out their forum. Those guys are some serious varminters who like their guns.

What do your 100 yards groups look like? How about 150 yards?I haven't been able to get any high velocity loads in 22lr to compete with the 17Mach2 at 100 yards and farther. If you can't group under 1",it's not easy to hit a gophers head at 100 yards,as they peek out of their hole.
