I'm being told that a barrel that is less than 18.5 inches makes my rifle restricted. Did I miss something here??

The overall length of my rifle is still over 26 inches... what's the deal here? Anybody have the laws on hand?

That's what my search yielded on CGN so far.

The real question is, do I need to call them and have the certificate changed or is it fine with the original barrel length on it? I don't want some ignorant policeman giving me trouble over my "menacing" .22LR.

I never bothered changing any cert.
If it made the rifle a restricted then I'd worry.

But an exact cert. may help explain to a cop that your rifle is non-restricted, so it's not a bad idea.

When's CPC going to rid the CFC of the ignorance?

I had the same problem when I called the CFC to tell them about my new 11.5" ER Shaw barrel for my 10/22. The lady on the phone tried to convince me that the rifle would now be restricted, I told her no, a 10/22 can have a shorter barrel if the OAL is 26" or greater, she continued to argue, I told her to check the regulations, 5 minutes later she confirmed I was right, and now my certificate says less than 470mm.

I have a semi-auto rim fire with a 18" barrel (less than 470mm). The cert says non-restricted. I would like to tell the lady at the CFC that ignorance of the law is not a excuse. Maybe all this BS will go away after the election.

Like arguing with a clerk is fun ... if they are going to answer the phone and actually do something , is it too much to ask that they know the regulations ?By now they must have heard this " scenario" before , so I suspect they are just trying to be a//holes and succeeding

I posted under black powder it's a sticky now the e-mail for the techs. get in touch with them

Excellent story; real-life anecdotes work well for proof! ;)

See, that's the problem... I don't trust these ignorant ####s to do the right thing. I'll try again tomorrow, but my tolerance for bullsh*t is extremely low.

I sent the "techs" an email: let's see what they come up with...

I want this on 'digital paper', so to speak, to throw it back at the clerk if needed. ;)

How important do you guys feel it is to inform them of this change? The regs say that you need to inform them of any modification that changes the classification of the firearm. Putting a shorter barrel on a rimfire doesn't change it, so why report it?

I'm guessing the answer is going to be that it will save a lot of grief when (if) you run into a LEO or CO.

Are there any other good reasons why a person should do this?

I've addressed this in my email to the techs:

To whom this may concern,

I have recently purchased a new factory barrel for my Ruger 10/22. The barrel is 11.5 inches in length, but the overall length of the firearm is still approximately 27 inches: if my knowledge of the laws is accurate, the rifle is still Non-Restricted, correct? Assuming this is right, do I need to make modifications to my certificate or can it remain in it's original state as a result of the firearm still being Non-Restricted?

Thank you for your time,
The Sloitastic Sloidusey

Barrel length

I had a 16.5 inch barrel for the ruger 77/22 and e-mailed them about removing the 20 inch factory barrel and installing the 16.5 inch.

They emailed me back stating the rifle would still be Non-restricted. I wanted it in writing since the CFC site is worded such that it appeared my rifle would be considered prohibited. I kept the email just in case.

What if you cut down the barrel to 16" and the OAL is still over 26" would that be non restricted?

I have the 11.5" on mine, I just called the CFC and told them I needed to ammend my cert. gave them the old barrel length, and the new barrel length, got a new cert ...no issues at all, on the phone maybe 5min max. The lady said they have reg#'s for like 8 or 10 different barrel lengths on the 10/22. I'm not near my certificates now, but I'll check it tomorrow and tell you the ref# for a 10/22 with the 11.5
