I want a 300 H H and don't quite know why.

Well, I have always wanted a 300 H&H, and have never really been able to put my finger on why?
Not a 30-06 guy, I guess its to plain jane, not that that is a bad thing, just never really wanted a plain old 30-06
I know a 300 Win mag, can do everything a H&H can and probably a little more, but just never warmed up to them.
The 300 H&H just looks good, tapered, long neck, feeds like butter.
Maybe I am looking for someone to talk me out of getting one built. Or on the other hand, might just get the nudge I need to get one built finally.
I think the 30cal mags, are about perfect for most things that walk on all 4s, just not the really dangerous stuff in the dark continent( and I have plenty of big bores if that comes up)
I was thinking of getting a nice older Remington BDL with skipline checkering(as that is my favorite) in any old magnum cal, get the barrel spun off and a new one installed and chambered in the old H&H
I like the BDL rifles, I know it might be odd, but I really do like the glossy look of them, I have plenty but most are used for other things, so I could buy a nice one, with good dark wood, and for well under $1500 total I could have a H&H made.
Thoughts?
Or am I just crazy

.300 H&H fan here, but never actually owned one.

I do have a set of dies, though, just in case one ever comes my way. :cool:

Great old cartridge. I had three at one time, now only two. The 300 H&H isn't difficult to find a great accurate load, and delivers a moderate recoil. Of course bullet selection is unlimited, with the many bullet manufactures......take you're pick. Fast, flat shooting and a ###y long sleek cartridge that will take any North American big game.

My moose rifle for several years was a very nice all original unmolested Pre-64 Win 70 in 300 H&H. I sold it after I stopped moosing. Been sorry many times since including right now. Photos and memories is all I got.

Finding one like this now would be difficult.

I too wanted one to compliment my 375 H&H. Since I like Win M-70's I looked for a while and found a decent one on the EE several years back. A pre 64. I redid the stock as a previous owner had screwed up refinishing it. I really enjoy the rifle and 300 H&H classic cartridge. Mine is very accurate with my reloads. I refer to the Super 30 as a 30-06 on steroids. I exclusively used a M-70 in 30-06 for 45 yrs. and it did everything I needed it to do. But now I am enjoying taking out the Super 30 in my latter years. Like the 30-06, the 300 H&H is an old classic cartridge. And personally I enjoy the classics.

So if you want one my advice is to go for it. Life's short.
 
Was my first magnum. Mines a pre 64 but in the group that were last made and not as sought after as the older better made ones. Been my prized rifle for over 40years now

No such thing as too pretty in rifles or women. Beautiful rifles are born to hunt. ;)

Side note on the .300 H&H, it has to be the smoothest feeding cartridge I’ve ever used. You could almost be tricked into believing pointing the rifle downhill with an open bolt risks chambering a round.

That's solid planning. I appreciate that kind of forethought, though I doubt that either of our wives would agree!

My Pre64 M70 in 300 H&H actually seems to feed smoother when you're picking up a round from the magazine than when you're cycling it empty. I know that makes no damn sense, but it's my truth and you're not allowed to question it!
