Anyone know where I can get a USGI front sight for my Norinco M14? Brownells has them listed as "May not ship to Canada".
I just ordered an M-1 Garand rear sight from Marstar, but they don't list any .14 fronts.
Will the USGI fit into my dovetail correctly?
How about a "National Match"?

Check the EE, I found one there. Brownells shipped me an SA rear aperture, they should ship the front sight as well. If not, SA ships to Canada directly, just call them.

"...Brownells has them listed as..." M-14 parts are restricted for export by the U.S. government. M1A parts are not. You need to read the stickies.

Ee? Sa?

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you very much. You're beautiful....

BTW-- Hitzy, I'm not familiar with these acronyms: What are "EE" and "SA"?
They sound like branches of the old German army.

Springfield Armory Inc. in the USA will ship stuff to Canada. Just ask for the lady who handles international sales to Canada (think her name is Kelly) and speak to her directly.
You may be able to order directly off their website too

Didja find one yet?
PM me if you are stuck.
Cheers, Barney

Thanks, Barney!
I've noticed that the front sight on my 305 is very tall compared to a USGI M-14's. It measures 0.450" along the trailing edge (that's nearly 1/2").
It stands taller than the wings/ears that are meant to protect it.
The reason for that height is the 18.5" barrel on my short rifle, compared to the full 22" barrel of the standard rifle. I'm told that a USGI front sight
might be too low for the shorter barrel...
Anyway, the tall front sight requires the rear sight's aperture to be cranked up beyond the level of its protective ears--mines up at 19 clicks.

A possible solution would be to have ~0.10" taken off the factory front sight. This ought to bring the rear aperture down to ~7-8 clicks for a standard
200 yard zero.
And if all goes as planned, the shorter sight will result in both front and rear being within the protective confines of their ears.

Could you measure and tell me how tall your (USGI) M-14 front sight is along the rear edge? Maybe it's not too short....

Cheers,
Tom

Springfield will sell you the taller front sight for their short barrelled SOCOM M1A.

Its base is taller so that the blade will be short enough to remain within the protective ears.

If you shave down the front sight, the rifle will shoot higher

I'll see what the Springfields have to say. Those Americans often won't ship anything M-14 to Canuckistan (altho "M1A" could be a different story!).

I "want" my rifle to "shoot higher"-- That way I can lower my aperture from the stratospheric 19 clicks elevation to a more 'normal' ~7 clicks, and it won't be sitting above the level of its ears.

That's the idea, eh? I'm lowering my front sight so that I can lower my rear sight. If they both go a bit below their 'ears', then that's a bonus.
That's my theory, anyway.

"k.i.s.s."

LOL its a Norinco M14 not a match grade target rifle ... Just take a small file to the sight post and bring down as much as you need then hit it with some touch up bluing or black paint after , everything can be had at crappy tire .

That sounds like some sensible advice. You're right-- I'm not expecting to knock the eye out of a crow at 1,000 meters!
At this point I'd be ecstatic if I could shoot 2 or even 3 MOA at 100 yards.

The Plan is to carefully file the blade down ~1/10th of an inch (why don't we start being metric now?) then have a day out at the range.
Ack! Now I have to think about shooting 'higher' or 'lower'...(smacks head). Well, at least if I can hit paper, I can adjust either way (rolls eyes).
