it was a beautiful day, so after the calgary gun show yesterday, i decided to go for a stroll through fish creek park. i'm walking along and all of a sudden, i'm accosted by this offensive odour, i swear if my nose hairs didn't fall out, they would have curled up. i explored a bit and saw the glint of metal in the sun. looking closer, i realized i had found a dead german soldier in fish creek park of all places, there was no mistaking that kraut helmet! he had been dead for some time, a number of months at least. his uniform was still intact and he had all his identifying marks and even a few medals, which i left in place as a sign of respect. but what really caught my eye was his weapon. kinda rusted and neglected under some soggy leaves was an MG-42. after i picked my bottom jaw off the ground, i set to clearing away some of the crap on my find. i finally revealed a SUPRISINGLY well kept machine gun, complete with drum mag, spare barrel(in perfect condition in the case no less!)and another full belt of 8mm Mauser. this doesn't happen every day people! this was meant to happen. but i also had a choice to make. dig a hole and give the german a proper burial, or take the MG and beat a hasty retreat? i decided to do both. i found his diary. his name was Dietrich Ostracizer. member of the 17th division of the panzer granediers. he was supposed to have served in the south of ukraine/russia towards the end of '44, but i'm sure he had no idea where in the hell he was. so i grabbed his helmet, which was also in great condition with a sweet swastika decal, and the leather liner was in super condition. its hanging on my wall, safe from the elements. i had this man taken care of, resting peacefully at last, when i returned my attention to my prize. i picked it up, shook it a bit and not much as far as rattles. this is good! i opend the belt feed top cover, made sure it was safe and clear, which it was. i didn't have far to walk but i sure wasn't going to take any main paths. i knew fish creek like the back of my hand from having fished it since i was young. theres some large trout in that small creek, nothing but the truth! once i got the gun back to my place on the outskirts of the park, i dissasembled the gun and degreased everything, leaving no stone unturned and no bolt unpolished. after everything was well cleaned, i inspected the bore. i hope my luck kept going this way, i could have shaved with my reflection from that bore it was so shiny. must be the crude in the alberta soil that kept everything so pristine. i reassembled everything, lubed it up, racked the bolt. what a damn fine sound! rack it again...and again...theres gotta be a 12 step program for this. i can see it now.

"hi, my name is andrew, and i'm a rackaholic"

you know the drill, we all do...
so where was i, oh yah. i still had a drum magazine with about half a belt left, and then another full belt that had been slung over dietrich's shoulders. i looked over every round good and close. found the primers to be in good condition, but i don't know if they were damaged by exposure to moisture/mud/neglect or what have you. i fiddled with the drum magazine and finally figured out how to open it, pretty pleased with myself so far. got that closed back up, but how does it attach to the reciever? after about a half hour, that too i figured out. i felt like i was ready to design the next be all/end all general purpose machine gun. it'll be called the beaver!
i also had the forsite to look for the 42's cleaning kit, which i found, but i have a good supply of hoppes and modern cleaning supplies, but its good for geriatrics. i got the ammunition cleaned up, all shiny and such. crest isn't only meant for teeth! but the one looming question about this gun everyone wants to ask. is...it...registered?! HELL NO!! and thats the way it will stay if i have anything to say about it. i think i can trust dietrich and my CGN brothers in arms to keep it on the downlow.
THIS THREAD IS USELESS WITHOUT PICS!!
and here they are. enjoy...
