Doing all of my shooting on the range, I have come to really appreciate magnified sights. I thought my TA33R8 ACOG was a pretty good compromise between distance and close range speed as it was only 3X. At very close range, I just closed the front flip cap and let the 'red chevron' image, superimpose on the environment image of my left eye. I ended up mounting this with a Larue mount on my 17" Sig Carbine.
I recently put an Aimpoint M4 (bought second hand) on my Sig 14" carbine. I was simply amazed by how fast it is at closer ranges. Along with the compactness of the carbine, it's really great. Of course this is just playing around in my house, I'll have to test both on the range and closer targets.
Now I just have to check out one of those IOR 1-4X26mm with the Horseshoe/ACOG like BDC reticle. but that's a much bigger scope!!
