Hi I have a russian SKS that I bought back when I didn't now much about sks's. How do I Id this eg: Date manuf. arsonal. It's in nice shape apart from having a gouge taken of the front end of the laminated stock. Paid 125$ for it 4 years ago. BTW is a ak sling the same as a sks sling, canvas with "s" shaped leather atachments. Thanks RF

We'd need a better description of the markings on it, but the main two arsenals are Tula and Izhevsk; it may also have a date on the top cover, and the serial number is usually on the left side (normally with a two Cyrillic letter prefix).

Soviet SKS are usually dated on the top cover along with the symbol of the arsenal that made it.

Tula is indicated by a large star on the receiver cover and Izhevsk by a fletched arrow in a triangle (triangle sometimes found within a circle)

Tula produced the SKS from 1949 -early 1956. Izhevsk produced for only two years: 1953/54.

Tula carbines from 1955 on were marked only with a star on the left side of the receiver behind the serial number with no markings on the receiver cover except the serial #
