I have very little knowledge about this. I know I need an action. First of all. I was thinking a Mauser 98. I heard these are the best military type. Are they? Or would a commercial type action be the way to go? I would like to do a 7x57! I would have to get a barrel done as I wouldn't want a military one. A stock, a decent trigger etc. Where should I start on my list of things to gather or steps to take. I am in no extreme rush to get it done as I am on a limited budget. A piece by piece kind of thing. You will have to excuse my ignorance on this subject as I know very little about this stuff. Thanks for the help!!!!!!!!!

If you plan on paying for quality work forget about military actions unless you have a lot of money.

Buy a used commercial rifle and re barrel and restock it would be the cheapest way to go ...
 
I used a 98 mauser action-BYF 41- Got a barrel on ebay 358 win,then shopped around on the net for shroud with swing safety,had a double set trigger I picked up at a gunshow a few years ago,also had a nice stock I traded for, Mark X hinged trigger guard from Numrich,the total without gun smithing is about 350$. My work and some gunsmithing from Ed Von atzigen is another300$ or so. Now I've got a truly custom mauser at less than half price. All it takes is patience,luck and some negotiation! JITC
