I'd like to get into IPSC!

Do many people use a Walther P99 for IPSC? I have a friend who would like to use this firearm (it's not me, a P226ST has my name on it).

While I suppose nearly any standard 9mm might be used during the very early stages of getting to know whether IPSC is for you....do you guys feel this choice "has legs" and can take you futher than the initial stages?

And I'm not considering anything fancy or racegun-type, just basic production IPSC for the first couple of years.

Is a P99 going to enhance or detract from the experience of those early years?

Thanks a lot!

You may not like the Walther p99 mag release, it is similiar to an HK mag release....some hate it, some don't. Not sure about reliability or life expectancy of a walther, and I have never seen one to be honest..I don't know of anyone using it for IPSC.

Thanks! Great advise!

What is the kind of gear that goes good with a CZ 75 for IPSC?
What do I need? I'm a starter!

Cz 75

6 mags / manufacturer? price?

belts / manufacturer? price?

mag poaches / leather/web? manufacturer? price?

holster / leather/web? manufacturer? price?

ammo / good price? brand?

Thanks a lot

Martin

Is the Walther P99 the one where the magazine release is manipulated by the trigger finger close to the trigger guard? If so, you might want to avoid using this firearm for IPSC.

I can't believe this was an accepted design. Under stress, I've seen somebody's finger slip off the magazine release and activate the trigger. Boom. Accidental discharge is a bad thing no matter what you are doing, especially since you tend to be reloading with the gun pointed in a direction other than the target.

Actually Martin, IPSC1 won the National title this year in production with a CZ hangun....the perfect guy to ask since he can probably let you try some of his gear... :)

I hope you can make it to the AMA match on the 15 Jan.....I also shoot :)

>Cz 75

contact info@gunsnthings.com for a price on a new cz-75B, 75bd, or 85combat. There are slight differences between these models, which might appeal to you; the 75B and 85C are DA/SA guns with a safety, so you might need to manually decock the gun before you holster it, in competition (let's not get into the whole 'which division, etc' crap here). If you feel really uncomfortable with that, you can order the 75BD which is a decocker model. The 85C has adjustable sights and an extended mag release, which is something the 75s don't have. Price - between 650 and 800, I'd think, depending on the model/etc, tax included, from guns n things. Don't get a SA CZ-75, or one which has been modified, you might not be able to use it in ipsc the way you would like to (rules stuff, don't need to get into it here). Aim for a stock cz-75b, cz-75bd, or cz-85combat. Oh, if you're a leftie, the 85s are ambi.

>6 mags / manufacturer? price?

don't know...factory and the south african k-mags tend to be pricey.... I use promags, but they are hit and miss - I have little problems with mine, but some people can't use theirs at all.

>belts / manufacturer? price?

CR Speed belt, really, really good. Get it from the ipsc store, www.ipsc.org, they are located in Canada, just outside of Toronto.

>mag poaches / leather/web? manufacturer? price?

I also use the CR Speed mag pouches, they work great. same source

>holster / leather/web? manufacturer? price?

Unless you have money to burn, get a $25 plastic FOBUS holster for the CZ (a cz-75 holster will work for all -75 and -85 models). There is very, very little advantage to going with a $160 race holster (I also use CR Speed holster, also from ipsc.org) - I timed myself, and I save 0.15s on a draw by using a race holster - not really an issue for a new comer, unless he wants to look cool and has money to spend ;) Good mag pouches will be far more valuable in a match setting.

>ammo / good price? brand?

I don't reload, I tend to use wolf reloads for practice (http://www.wolfbullets.com/Spec.htm) and winchester USA ammo for matches - I get it from LeBaron for about $9/box, or you can order it from the wild west shooting centre in Edmonton (he's here as Kanada Kid, I believe). Either winclean or regular fmj will do, but don't use the 147gr bullet ammo, it is waaaay too powerful for the CZ; I use the 115gr. I never used the 124gr, so I don't know.

If you have any more questions about the CZ guns, post here, or PM me directly.

But keep in mind - you need a gun which fits your hand; just because the CZs work great for me, doesn't mean they will work great for you, you'll been to at least handle one to make sure it fits, if you can't actually shoot one.

If you like the general size/shape of the CZ, you might want to look at the Slovakian K100 from GrandPower
http://www.grandpower.sk/start.php?itemid=13&catid=4 or http://www.k100.sk/new/en/ - marstar carries those (www.marstar.ca ) I'm getting one next...

the 147gr Winchester ammo is a little hot at 144pf. I am switching shortly to a 124gr in Winchester, or Wolf reloads. I have purchased from Wild West and they are good to deal with.
