Hello all. I just picked up a bubbad Norwegian Krag with a 22” barrel and a 1905 date. All serial numbers (75836) except bolt (361) match.

From what I’ve read on the net, carbines had a 20.5” barrel, so it’s not a carbine. My first thought then was that this was a common M94 in which the barrel was cut down. However right under the front site appears to be what’s left of a bayonet mount. If this was originally a 29 or so inch barrel which had been shorted, then the bayonet mount would have been cut off, so I’m GUESSING the barrel is original length. Any ideas as to what I might have. (Sorry no camera, so I can’t post pictures).

I managed to get a camera:

Here's a couple picture of what I think is the ground off bayonet mount.

A couple of other pictures for fun.

Your rifle, friend, is the absolute twin to mine, a 1918 which I wish I could find more information about.

Sorry I can't help further than that.

I've been looking into this some more and have a couple of observations. The ground off mount looks to be too short to be Norwegian, but does look like the picture of an American mount that I’ve seen and the only 22" barrels I can find are America. So now I'm wondering if it's possibly an American 30-40cal Krag barrel mounted on a Norwegian receiver. Does any know if this is possible? Also I'm been assuming that this rifle was 6.5 x55 Swede, but now I'm wondering if it's possibly 30-40 Krag. Would any one in the Vancouver area have a single 30-40 Krag brass they would be willing to sell so I could test fit?

Thanks Mark

The .30-40 Krag is a rimmed casing and it is only a few thou bigger at the base than a .303. If a .303 fits loosely (the Krag case also being a bit longer), then your rifle will be a .30-40.

I do have my doubts on this, however, as my own rifle, a duplicate of yours, eats 6.5x55 rather nicely.

The Danish Krags used the 8x58R cartridge but your rifle is not Danish. For one thing, the Danish magazine-box opened from the FRONT and hinged OUT. Yours is the standard Norwegian type, hinged at the BOTTOM and opening DOWN: far superior.

American Krags followed the Norwegian pattern, but are marked VERY thoroughly as to their manufacture.

Hope this helps.
