Hello all
Newbee here with a question.
I have a lead on a 35 year old Ruger Security Six 357, blue, with a 6" barrel.
The older fellow(77) is asking me what its worth. I want a good deal but don't want to rip the guy off.
I haven't seen the gun yet as he is 2 hours away and with the weather I am waiting a bit. He says it is in great shape with only a hand full of rounds ever put through it.
Anybody have any ideas on what to offer this guy?

$400 - $450

I would think more like 350.oo would be a fair price.
400.oo-450.oo would be a good retail price in store.
Last one I sold while back was 375.oo

Howdy ; 300 plus would be a nice price BUT due to the current price of new ruger gp 100 It seems most people are asking in the 400 plus range for nice stainless ones . I should not have sold mine ,like it better then the current GPs.

I paid $350 for mine (new) in 1977/8? I would imagine it is worth the same or slightly more today.

$400 - $450

Yup, that for a nice shape restricted one.

I sold a 12(6) one for considerably less on here awhile back. Nice gun but the 12(6) prohibs aren't as desireable.

NAA.

I have previously owned several of the Ruger Sixes,
and at one time was a professional pistol smith, modifying the Ruger Sixes and Redhawks for PPC, bowling pin shoots, or IPSC .

IMHO,
the Ruger Security Six,
especially in a SS 6" version,
is one of the strongest, if not the best all around .357 Magnum revolver available.
PERIOD!!!!

I currently have a 6" SS Ruger Security Six in .357 Mangle'm, with Hogue grips, [5] of the proper Ruger Speed loaders, and a trigger spring kit. When I took it in on trade, we agreed on a value of $ 550 for the package ... which seemed fair to me.

Since then, I've had the cylinders chamfered by MD Charlton, and picked up some speed loader pouches and a holster. Future plans include back boring and porting the barrel, stippling the back strap, and a very soft bead blast ....
which gives the Ruger revolvers in SS a beautiful, almost pearlescent sheen.

Then ,
looking forward to maybe shooting some PPC and IPSC Revolver ....
again, after 20 years away from it.

At that point,
the price of such a perfectly balanced and fitted custom revolver is .....
??Priceless??

Like you need more info;
Plus, minus 4 bills is respectful to the elderly Gent.
A newer mod. (old mods have slim barrel and a kind of flat back-strap profile at the web) Sec. six is never a bad buy.

Thanks for all the answers and opinions.
I went up and saw him tonight, It is not a six inch like he thought but a 4". I have the designation so I will get it anyway. I told him to talk to his son and they can decide what they would like and we will go from there.
Thanks again for all who replied. It gave me a valuable insight into the value.

P.S. from the serial number and Ruger site i was able to determin it is from 1972.

FWIW, 4 inch barrel makes it a prohib. So unless you have a 12(6), you are out of luck. And the value is considerably less than the 350 to 450 being tossed around previously. Reason is, prohib holders are a diminishing group, hence the market for these guns are growing smaller. Law of supply and demand says lower demand means lower prices.

Personally, I will not pay more than 200 bucks for a LNIB blued Security Six, assuming of course I was a 12(6).

Thanks Easyrider
Thats what I was talking to him about when I saw the gun. He now realizes how it affects the value as well. The gun has been fired but is in VG shape IMHO, bluing 100%, small(vey faint) line on the wheel, bright clean bore etc. And yes I am 12(6).
