Hi there,
Got a Tikka T3 lite .223 on lay away till PAL arrives,in the mean time I was wondering what range would be best for me to zero it ? It'll have a Leupold 3-9-40 rifleman for a scope, probably using 45 to 55gr ammo.
Lots of gophers out there at ranges from zip to 100 yards...........so what do I zero it in at ???

It doesn't sound like you'll be feeling the need to really stretch out. Something like 1'' high at 100 yards will result in a trajectory where you won't have to worry about elevation for anything out to a little over 200 yards, even on targets as small as gophers.

But there is a good chance that your gun will turn out to be plenty accurate to hit small targets out to 300 yards (wind permitting), and so in the future you might consider a higher poi at 100 yards.

You might have fun, at least while waiting for your pal, playing with trajectory options for your new gun. http://w ww.eskimo.com/~jbm/cgi-bin/jbmtraj-5.0.cgi is a simple and free trajectory calculator. The Winchester ammunition web site is good for giving both the velocities and ballistic coefficients for their different offerings, and that might be a good place to start for inputs, if you're interested.

As hard as I try some of the math involved confuses me !! (math was never my strong point).I'm thinking zeroing at 60 yards should do the trick with most ammo ? Does that sound ok to you guys ???

Sight in at 60 yards is a quick and dirty solution to the sight in problem, but you may find that you have to adjust for windage at longer ranges. The bottom line is that you have to try it and see. Shoot at specific ranges and make up a drop card for each range. This can be used to adjust your scope so you don't need to hold over at long range or hold under at short.

I have mine pin on at 100yds. Then I came home from the range and downloaded a few ballistic charts with bullet drop at whatever the yardage and put them in my shooting bag. With a bit of practice you learn that chart really quick. Now if it moves anywhere inside of 350yds it wears a 55gr bullet.

You will not believe this but the 'family' has gone and sold my little piece of prairie..........as of July 2nd it's gone.............to the bloody hutterites of all people, mind you we got some good coin for it !
damn and blast.

There's still lots of prairie out there ... you'll just have to go ask permission.

Sight in for 1.5" high ... you can then pretty much hold "dead" on out to 225 and still hit a prairie dog.
