Ideas on a shot gun for the girl friend

Ditto on the 20 ga. gas gun idea. I've two like that; an 1100 magnum and an 11-87 Youth. Both are pussycats, and the 11-87 is even lighter. And with a 21" barrel and shorter stock, it's much easier for smaller people to use.

Yes, recoil guns do kick harder.

My gf loved my mossberg pump action 500 20ga, we shot clays all summer with it ( she got quite good at doubles too )

There's one for sale right on in the EE !!

Got my wife the Mossberg 500 Bantam last year, she loves it. Shoots clays with field loads and slugs for deer with no problem. As she's about 5 feet tall, the shorter length of pull and reach for slide are great for her.

Bought one for my wife for christmas this year. I tried to but the pink remington but could not find one. They are nice little guns!!

I keep hearing this, and yes compared to gas guns their recoil a little more. This is probably partly due to their operating mechanism not being forward of the balance point and the guns generally being lighter. But then isn't this exactly what you want in a shotgun geared towards a lady, something lighter, relatively softer shooting, and better balanced. Regardless they kick less than o/u or sxs, yet people don't seem to gripe about that as much.

I got my wife (gf at the time) into shooting and her first shotgun was a Remington Youth 11-87 20ga. She has a great time hunting with it as well as shooting clay birds.
Its short LOP fits her very well and despite light felt recoil, she shoots with a PAST recoil pad and says it makes all the difference. She even likes shooting my .375 at the range with her recoil pad because it dissipates recoil so nicely (not gun-specific but definitely something to consider).

Gun fit is very important, especially if you would really like her to shoot. Inexpensive makes things much more difficult.

20 gauge can be a handicap, especially if you plan to shoot the clay target sports with a new shooter. Recoil is relative to the amount of lead that you are pushing down the barrel, velocity of the load and barrel bore diameter.

Felt recoil is primarily dependent on how well the gun fits the shooter. This is probably the key factor.

I would suggest a 12 gauge 1100. Look for one with a short, choke tubed barrel. There are a ton of used adjustable stocks and barrels available. If you buy used at the right price, you will be able to get your money back out of the old 1100 when you sell it and she moves on to the next level.

My wife is 5'6, 115 pounds. She shoots a 12 gauge 870 Wingmaster. She also has the youth 20g 870, but prefers the larger gun for wingshooting. The 20g is now only used for deer (when shes not using her 30'06) or bear.

Yeah like i would like to get her a 12 gauge as it would be a good all around gun. she doesnt have issues taking the kick back on it from what I see and with her wanting to shoot it.
Only thing she keeps telling me is she wants a scope on the gun and i dont think that would be an issue on doin so.
