Identifying M14 Wood Stocks

I have two usgi wood stocks. One is lighter in colour and also lighter in weight.

Would these be indications that one is walnut (darker and heavier) and the other birch ? Or is it variations on walnut ?

Birch was an alternate standard. Birch is 20% stronger than walnut and may have pretty 'tiger strips' when cleaned.

Birch has been stained dark to similate walnut , so no could be the answer .
More than likely the lighter color is birch , but not necessarliy so on the dark .It sould go either way on the dark .
