I know this question has probably been asked a thousand times before, but I need help in identifying my cz k-98. First off, where should I be looking? Are there any marks under the stock? I haven't had the stock off yet. The only place this thing is marked is on the left side of the reciever "CESKOSLOVENSKA ZBROJOVKA,A.S,BRNO" It looks like the waffenampt marking on top of the reciever were ground off, but I think the serial number is original to the gun, as some of the grinding overlaps the number, which would say to me it was done after the gun was numbered. The serial number is 9660 numbered on the right side of the reciever ring and has an "L" centered under it. The bolt handle is also numbered 9660 and has an "L" centered under it. Under the barrel, at the exposed portion just behind the muzzle it is marked very faintly

But is kinda hard to read one or two letters may be off. I will try to get pics up as soon as possible. (I don't own a digital camera) Thanks.
oh, also it has two lion(?) marks on the left side: just left of the serial number and on the barrel.

Yeah, pics would help. It could be a war era build or a postwar built on leftover parts. From the sounds of it based on the four digit serial and capital letter, it is a postwar K98 assembled by the Czechs at the Brno factory. I have an Israeli converted K98 that is very similar. It has the Czech lion crest on the receiver instead of the German factory code (Dot or Dou for the Czech K98's) and has the Brno marking on the side of the reciever instead of the regular Mod 98 for German K98's.

The Samco part is the importer's marks. (Samco in Florida)

I've got an East German rework K98 that has a serial only 3 numbers off from yours. All the east german rework characteristics are very similar to Yugo rework ones(scrubbed waf's and eagles, reserialed parts&stock etc.) what are the chances they were done under contract by the same arsenals?

Sounds to me like a BRNO made gun, not a refurbed German gun. Uless it has waffenampt proofs on the receiver, it's not German. Could be the Czech lion was scrubbed at some point?

mine? It's got the KVP barracks police starbursts on it, indicating it was used by said force post war. This has been confirmed by several dedicated mauser enthusiasts. Also, the scrubbing was incomplete, and parts of the dirty birds with swastikas are still visible, as are many, many crisp clean waff's. Finally, the reciever itself still bears the Sauer & Sohn factory code and date (147 and 1939) so a wild guess...it might be german...
