As usual, I missed an interesting discussion tonight. It got me to thinking though, how do you properly identify a pinned sks barrel, a threaded and pinned barrel, a sleeved sks barrel, or a plain threaded barrel on an sks?

I can understand the basics - pinned versus no pins, but how do you know when it's a threaded barrel with a shim that has been threaded, or a barrel that has been shimmed into place without a pin? So far none of my sks's are showing any signs of anything wrong, but it would be good to know what to look for in future sks purchases, or for those who are buying their first.

The threaded sleeve with pinned bbl were prefixed by "04" on the serial number. Likewise, the "pin" runs vertically on those ones instead of horizontally as on the legit military ones.

Those carbines came of one particular batch only brought in by a west coast importer who then had to recall them as bbls started walking out.

It was an attempt to salvage threaded bbl (type 1) SKS receivers by mating them to a threaded sleeve with a pinned bbl inserted into it.

There is no military Type 56/SKS maker that used this method of construction.

so these batch has a barrel lug and vertical pin , one on each side or just one side (left or right )?

I have a "04" that I bought from Lever years ago.

I've fired a few hundred rounds from it now, the barrel has never moved. Some of them that had problems, by no means all.

Its actually quite neat, came with a rubber butt pad and a 18.5" barrel instead of a 20" , its a carbine version of a carbine :)

Didn't come with a bayonet so I ordered one online and had it cut to fit.
