I recently inherited an old ass Mossberg 146B .22 rifle. When I got it the bolt was already removed from the rifle, so I decided to go ahead and put it back in. When I went to do so, I noticed the bolt just didn't seem to want to go in at all. Upon closer inspection, I noticed that there is a little piece of metal/doohickey located inside the action that looks like this:

When I go to put the bolt back in the bolt appears to get caught by this weird growth:

It seems to prevent the bolt from moving any further. My question then becomes: I am simply doing something wrong, or is something wrong the rifle? Would anyone happen to know? Or is the bolt I have for the rifle the wrong one? Is there some way to fix it, or should I abandon all hope?

Here's a photo of the bolt in question:

Thanks!

Turn the bolt so the extractors are on either side when puting it into the rifle.Once you get it into the bolt handle the bolt handle may need to be rotated upward slightly to line up with the slot in the receiver. From your bottom picture the front and back half of the bolt need to be turned slightly.
Scott..

I have a 146b. VERY accurate rifle. The gizmo on the inside of the receiver is the ejector. When you pull the bolt back, it kicks out the empty. This extractor rides in a channel cut into the side of the bolt.

In your picture, you have the bolt rotated approx 45 degrees. The firing pin should be at the twelve o'clock position. As Archer Sam mentioned, align the bolt with the extractor first, slide it in and rotate the handle to slide into the race. As the 146b cocks on opening, the bolt may have to be re-cocked by hand in order to re-insert back in the receiver.

Hope this helps.

Yes, you have to do as already mentioned. I also found it helps to hold your tongue a certain way while partly sticking it out. This helps to prevent you from swearing in case young children are around!
