So as I understand all this CDP and IDPA are much the same. CDP is being sponsered by CSSA and ram rodded by David Burke. IDPA is international meaning USA and is spear headed by Steve Shirely. One wants $60 to compete yearly and the other typical of CSSA wants $40 per course and I mean per course e.g. club level participation, club level RO, participate at the regional level course, etc. etc. etc. Turning back a few pages from David Burke's article in the latest CSSA rag to Don Jones's article on why golf is doing so well maybe we have a reason.

And don't hand me this is all about safety. This is all about money.

Hi Haywire,

There are a number of reasons why you might join either disipline. I am a qualified CDP instructor and former competitor, I am also an IDPA instructor and competitor. There is not a lot of difference, other than the fact that if you join the IDPA, all your training will be free, and by that I mean, your IDPA shooter orientation training (AKA holster course), your International RO course, Your Appointment as an IDPA Instructor etc, etc, etc. If I am teaching your course I do not even charge for my expenses to get to and stay at a hotel near your range for the course. I would assume that match fees are similar between the disiplines, however with IDPA only enough money to pay for range fees, targets, often lunch, and target repairs are charged for a match. I have never seen an IDPA match in Canada cost more than 20.00. Also with IDPA you will recieve with your paid membership a ballcap, rulebook, ID card, Classification Card, as well as a subscription to the official IDPA magazine. You will be entitled to shoot at IDPA events anywhere in the world, and will be invited to shoot at many of the National Championships of countries around the world. You will be world ranked with a HQ's that will take care of all this administration. Contrary to what you may have read in the CSSA magazine there will never be an affiliation between IDPA and CDP, you will never be able to shoot at an IDPA event in Canada or the US as a CDP member, and you will never recieve a rulebook from IDPA as a CDP member. I am on the phone with IDPA HQ several times a week and these issues have been made very clear to me. There is no competition between IDPA and CDP, they are two seperate disiplines. Shooters are free to join one or both organizations at will, and many do. I hope this answers your question!
