IDPA / IPSC lay of the land for a Canada newcomer?

Hi everyone,
I used to regularly shoot IDPA in South Africa with a smattering of IPSC and 3 gun thrown into the mix. I've been in Canada for 4 years now and am itching to get back into sport shooting. I'm based in Burlington, ON.

How active and accessible is IDPA v IPSC?
Whilst I love IDPA and am very familiar with the rules (SO certified, and was chairman of our local club back in SA) I really don't want to have to drive hours to get to monthly shoots. And I would like to be part of an active shooting community.

Thanks in advance for any advice or input.

Look around for a club to join in your area that plays the sports your looking for. Hopefully more folks from your area chime in. EESA has what you seek but is a drive from Burlington. IDPA was big before covid. I’ve noticed a drop in folks since it started. We used to cap it at 25 shooters regularly. Now we sit around 10-14 every other Wednesday.

These days IPSC seems more active the IDPA. I got in 6 matches in 2020 and 8 matches in 2021. In all that time I have not seen any IDPA matches. You will most likely need to go through a black badge course to get certified.

In order for a Canadian citizen to compete in IPSC matches in Canada, successful completion of our Black Badge Safety Training course is necessary. The course consists of a few hours of classroom time and approximately two days of live firing on the range.

I have an impression that going thru the official route, IPSC Ontario, may be frustrating. Hook up with your local club and you should be good.

I think there's probably more IPSC clubs in Ontario than IDPA clubs in all of Canada so IPSC will definitely have more options but that's not to say there aren't options for IDPA. Some clubs also shoot CSSA's CLAS-H which is similar to IDPA but a bit less strict.

Might depend on where you are. Our IDPA club runs 17+ matches a year, while the IPSC club at the same range is lucky to squeeze in more than six.

If you’re looking for something in the area similar to idpa as opposed to ipsc, you might want to look at the Galt Sportsmens Club. Galt runs weekly ODPL(Ontario defensive pistol league) practices and a handful of matches each year, the rules of which are based on idpa afaik. If you’d like more info feel free to pm me.

I think you're in the best spot in the country for action shooting. As mentioned, your biggest first challenge will be finding a Black Badge course. Once that's out of the way, there must be at least 10 clubs that hold IPSC matches regularly, within an hour to 1.5 from Burlington. IPSC is by far the most organized and easiest to find matches for but once you start to mingle at the clubs you'll find that there are a lot of ad hoc 3 gun and tactical rifle matches in the area as well.
