If the nylon guide is a retaining deviced and it will not fall out if turned upside down and if the holder covers 60% of the clip/ammo, but this one the height of the center post does NOT come up past the moon clip so no this one is NOT legal.

Here is one of mine that I modified to make it IDPA compliant:

Why

If the nylon guide is a retaining deviced and it will not fall out if turned upside down and if the holder covers 60% of the clip/ammo, but this one the height of the center post does NOT come up past the moon clip so no this one is NOT legal.

Does this boil down to the word "through" in the rulebook??

John

I took some 147gn 9mm FMJ projectiles and tapped the base in. Should be legal now? It now projects above the moon clip.

I prefer the ones I got from TK Custom.

It boils down to they are NOT legal, thats it, plain and simple.

Why??

I am curious what you base this opinion on.

As I pointed out they look pretty much the same as the ones in the rulebook except for the height of the center post.

Is this the issue?

What part of the rules - as per the current rulebook- makes them illegal equipment.

I'm not saying you are wrong - I am just curious why you say they are illegal.

Take another look, the 2 have completely different center posts. The one in question has a nylon guide, the other has a high post that rises above the level of the moon clip the pictures are clear as to what is legal and what is not.

Okay.

I think? you answered my question without answering my specific questions.

I think? that the issue is the word "through" ?? in the rule book.

I would be curious where this interpretation comes from and whether or not it has been confirmed by HQ.

When I look at the OP's carrier, if it meets all the requirements as per retention, I don't see how the height of the center post could make any difference.

Again, look at the pictures and the words underneath, they are clear as to what is legal and what is not. If that does not satisfy you, all I can suggest is you forward your concern to HQ and they will assist you.

Yeah whatever

Anyhow I did some research on the IDPA Forum.

As I suspected the issue boils down to the word "through" in the rulebook. The center post must protrude all the way through the center of the moonclip. The holder in the OP's link does not meet this test.

A lot of guys have come up with solutions similar to Aqualungs.

One guy took these holders to a match only to find they were illegal. He took the erasers from pencils and jammed them into the tops of the holders and that made them legal.

It is just another one of IDPA's sillier rules that we all have to live with :)

Actually the pics in the rulebook don't really help.

The legal one uses a center post.

The illlegal holder hangs from the cartridges.

Hence the confusion.

The language itself is less than clear. If some emphasis had been placed on the word 'through' it would help.

Glad to see you finally understand the rule, I was going to suggest that you may want to take the New Shooter Orientation just to ensure you know exactly what the rule is, but you have answered your own question.

Thanks for all your 'help'

Maybe one day you will learn the difference between a pronuncement and an explanation

Then you just might be able to help people actually learn something about the game and the 'why' of things rather than just the 'what'.

A deeper understanding of the game and its rules benefits all who play.

I am not sure how much clearer picture illustrations can be, but again, you are more then welcome to take the New Shooter Orientation if required, there are many out your way who would be more then happy to administer it for you.

John:

The moonclip holder in question are not legal in IDPA unless you do the above mod or purchase the buttons from California Competitions works.

See page 39 of the rule book showing a carrier similar to the one that you cited.
