Curious if I join online....will I be issued a membership number right away, with paperwork to follow by mail. Or is there a time frame required to be issued membership number?
Any info is appreciated. Understand that I can enter one event, or classifier without membership, but would like to join prior to either event.

You will have proof of payment immediately along with a number. There is n time frame. With your proof of payment you would be good to go at any IDPA club in Canada. The IDPA Classifier is a a standard three stage event which can be shot individually with a Safety Officer or as part of a regularly scheduled match. At my club we do both. Once you are a member you can shoot a Classifier.

You can access the IDPA rule book here: www.idpa.com

Yes IDPA makes exceptions for people that my have disabilities or limited movement. And no your required to have a membership prior to shooting a classifier or sanctioned matches.

Do you need any previous courses to shoot? Or sign up and good to go?

Individual clubs have rules governing who may or may not shoot out of a holster. I holster course is not a requirement for membership in IDPA or to shoot matches. That decision is deferred to the club's policy. IDPA Canada has an approved holster course offered through the affiliated clubs. You should check with your local IDPA club.

Thanks for the info. I will look into this more.

See rule 9.8.1.

9.8.1 Only current IDPA-affiliated clubs may run Classifiers and only current IDPA members may shoot the Classifier. New shooters that have applied for IDPA membership, but do not yet have an IDPA number may shoot the Classifier and the results will be held by the Match Director until the shooter receives a membership card.

When you sign up for IDPA you get your membership number nearly right away via email anyways, that's your proof of membership. Having run IDPA matches for 3 years now I have yet to ask to see a membership card as our online registration system requests a membership number which can be verified with IDPA HQ online.

Yes, I'm aware of that. It was also mentioned earlier. I haven't had a problem either, in six years of running IDPA matches, with verifying IDPA membership. The point was that it is technically possible to run the classifier without your number.

Thanks for the help... That does clear it up..if joining online, the site that I go to is actually the American site, as the Canadian site seems to relay to that site to join, is that correct, that I am using the American membership, after which I identify my self as Canadian? Hope this question makes sense, as I expected to have an IDPA Canada membership, or are the numbers international?

You only join at the IDPA International website (which happens to be American). There is no separate Canadian process, except at the local club or section where you ultimately end up shooting regularly.

So is that all you need to do? Join the international website, become an IDPA member, strap on a rig and go to town? Is there not a certification course to shoot IDPA, similar to a black badge course?

Individual clubs have different holster certification requirements. IDPA in Canada has a certification course that is available through IDPA affiliated clubs. The course fees are set by the clubs. The course provides a review of IDPA shooting rules and hands on instruction and practical experience in drawing safely from a holster. Club requirements vary from club to club and province to Province. I have taken both and aside from the obvious shooting rules differences there is not any differences in what you will learn. Some shooting clubs run their own holster courses.

You can become a member of IDPA by simply joining as you have done.
