Okay, I'm slow so it doesn't matter in my case. But you fast guys out there, is there any advantage/disadvantage between 4.2" and 6" revolvers? I figure a 4.2 is quicker to draw and a 6 has a better sight radius. Some day down the road I'm going to buy a .357 and I'm wondering which barrel length the competitive shooters find advantageous.

If your ever planing on shooting in the US you need a 4.2". Only in Canada are you exempt from the barrel length rule.

Personally I'm shooting a 625 with a 5" barrel and love it, I've now switched over to IPSC so the barrel length is not a concerne. I still shoot IDPA but if I'm ever going to shoot in the US it will be for IPSC.

To answer your question, I don't know. A friend shoots a 6" 610 and I don't like how it swings, hard to explain but it feels huge compared to my revolver. Where as he's not a fan of how my shorter 625 handles, just a personal preference and what your used to shooting.

Yes there is a big difference between drawing a 4.2" vs 6" barrel from an IDPA legal holster. I even found the difference between my 4.25" Kframe and my 5" 625 significant.

Probably depends on the physical size of the shooter but for me at 5' 9" this has been my experience.

Anyone have experience with the gp-100 4.2. I have the k frame smith but like some one else said it feels like drawing a log from the holster.

If you intend to continue to shoot IDPA SSR Division get the 4.2". with S&W now offering a Canadian compliant 4.2" SSR gun and Ruger also in the game with their 4.2", the Canadian SSR exemption will not likely last forever. We will give a minimum of 1 year notice if the exemption goes for SSR Division. ESR Division will not likely change due to an absence of 4.2" guns in the market.

As others have indicated the Exemption only applies to Canada.

If you do decide to go for a 4.2" 686 then I can recommend Mike Benedict at Talon Tactical for a kydex holster and speedloader holders for the revolver.
