Just starting out in IDPA - watched my first match this weekend. It was great!! Have my .45 at home, covered in drool, awaiting my club ATT.

But.. after seeing the shooters in the shotgun phase, I'm doubting my 870 Express in this venue. 5 round mag, and it's long as hell. I've read tube extensions on an 870 can be difficult.

Would it be worth investing in a combat rigged shotgun?
I've looked at the 870 Marine magnum, and don't like it so much - a little pricey at best.

This caught my eye:
Mossberg Model 500 Mariner 12 Gauge Pump Action Shotgun with Pistol Grip
Check it out at S.I.R. - http://www.sirmailorder.ca/
$391 with pistol grip, 9 round mag.

Any opinions on the Mossberg 500 for IDPA? Or recommendations on a better gun?

1. Get a shorter barrel for your 870. I have a 20" Special Purposes with rifle sights. I had a 28" when i got my express super magnum.

2. Get a 3 rd extention, u will need to drill the mag tube to get rid of the mag. restriction dimples. Easy to do.

If u want a new shotgun look at the new setup Questar is bringing. The Mossy 590 A1 might be another great option.

your express is fine, just get a mag extension- there are used barrels around, you can get one cut to length, after you put the extension on
Practice practice practice-
870 is a great gun

Thanks guys. Any recommendations on where I can get a mag extension?
If I find a longer barrel for sale, can I saw it myself without it having to be verified?

undertaker: Was gonna ask you after I got some feedback - you beat me to it!

1. Also contact P&D and TSE.
2. You can get any barrel and have it shortened, but it must be more than 18.5" ??? If it is shorter you must get it verified. Please chime in if you know for sure.
