I was looking at getting into idpa ad I was wondering what the weight limits are. I saw on the idpacanada website that there is a exemption for 6 inch barrels so we must have additional weight limits.

I am looking at getting a 4.2 inch S & W 686 to make weight but am also considering a 44 mag depending on weight limits.

thanks in advance for any help.

AFAIR there is no extra for weight so rules are:

6. Stock Service Revolver Division (SSR)
Handguns permitted for use in this division must be:
A. Any revolver of .38 Caliber (.357” or larger) or larger that
utilizes ammunition with a rimmed case and is not reloaded
with a full moon clip.
B. Barrel length of 4.2” or less (as measured from the front of
the cylinder).
C. Have a maximum unloaded weight of 42 oz.
D. Be loaded to the division capacity of six (6) rounds in the
cylinder. Seven (7) and eight (8) shot revolvers are permitted,
but may only load six (6) rounds.
PERMITTED Modifications (Inclusive list):
1. Sights to another conventional notch and post type (see
“sights” in glossary for further information).
26
2. Action work to enhance trigger pull as long as safety is
maintained (smoothing the trigger face, removing the hammer
spur, use of over travel stop, conversion to DA only and
addition of ball detent are considered action work and are
permitted).
3. Grips to another style or material that is similar to factory
configuration (no weighted grips).
4. Chamfer the rear of the chambers.
5. Shortening of factory barrels.
6. Custom finishes.
EXCLUDED Modifications (NON-Inclusive list):
1. Oversize or heavy barrels. (6" Allowed)
2. Oversize cylinder latches.

I have been searching to find the weight of a 4.2 inch 686. the Smith and Wesson site says the 4 inch inch is 39.7 oz. Wikipedia has the weight of the 4 inch listed at 42 oz which would put the 4.2 overweight for ssr.

I would be inclined to believe that S&W knows the weight of their own gun but I am buying the revolver to shoot ssr and would hate to get there and find out I can only shoot esr. if i wanted to shoot esr I would buy somehting in 45 acp that is milled for moonclips

is the 4.2 inch 686 legal to shoot in Canadian idpa?

For those with only have access to revolvers with barrel lengths > 4.2" there is no weight limit provided they are in stock form. No PPC prepared guns with the heavy barrel ridge or added bull barrels. This exemtion applies to matches held in Canada only.

While there is no rule against it a .44 mag would have to make weight if it has a =/<, 4.2" barrel.

The 4.2" 686 must make weight for the Division you want to shoot it in ie 42oz for SSR, 50oz for ESR. I have never weighed one so best to weigh one before you buy one. I would be inclined to do this. The 686 SSR 4" weighs in at 38.3 oz so I would think the 4.2" version would be under the weight limit. My Ruger GP-100 makes weight and it is under the weight limit and a slightly bigger gun.

ps You might want to print this out just in case, in the unlikely event, there is any questions from a Match Director.

Hey everyone.

Well i can answer your question. I just purchased a 686 "Canadian" with a 4.2 inch barrel. I just weighed it on a scientific analytical scale and it turns out to be 1125.63 grams.. which calculates to 39.70 onces. So it does make weight for SSR..

Question for Canuck44... Would i be able to travel to the USA and compete with this gun in matches there, seeing as it is sub 42 ounces?

So now I guarantee with the 686 ordered that they will announce a 4.2 inch 625 any day now!!!! Isn't that always the way?

Does anyone know of someplace to get a nice holster for the 4.2 686? a molded plastic (bladetech exc) or a nice leather holster.

Yes you can. The max bbl length for SSR is 4.2" and as you noted, the max weight is 42 oz. See page 25 of the IDPA Rule Book.

Yes. It makes weight and has the right barrel length.
