I currently IPSC Black Badge but would like to try IDPA and take some training to help me get started. I have a hard time finding pointers to help get started. Any insights, suggestions are welcome.
#1 - read the rule book - there's more rules in IDPA than IPSC wrt how, when you can shoot/reload/cover etc...
#2 - find a local club and go shoot. If you have your BB, then you've proven you're safe with a gun/holster. BB is probably more training and round count than almost any idpa NSOC, so you're ahead of the game already. To compete, you may have to run an NSOC, or you may be good to go with BB - just depends on the club.
I shoot both and like both for different reasons. IDPA is fairly prescriptive about how you must engage targets and reload and use cover. IPSC is essentially your choice how you approach a stage and shoot it and doesn't care if you drop a mag with rounds in it
I'll continue to shoot both as hell, where else you gonna get the oppty to run 'n' gun??

Thanks, Steve
If you've already went through the BB course, you're already well prepared to shoot IDPA. Not having a prerequisite exam is something that makes IDPA pretty easy to get into. Just find a club and show up to a match. Most if not all clubs are very accommodating of prospective new members.
I wouldn't get too hung up on the rules. Its a different sport, and like every other sport, it has a different set of rules. And they come very naturally if you understand the premise for them.
don't even bother reading the rule book if you don't have time. Just show up, I can almost guarantee someone will help you through it. You might get nuked with penalties, but you'll get the hang of it.
IDPA main differences:
1. No race holsters. Strong side concealment holster required. Also most stages requires an outer concealment article of clothing.
2. Cannot drop mags if they still have rounds in them. Must do a tactical reload. Empties are ok to drop.
3. Cannot reload while moving.
4. MUST engage targets from cover. Procedural if engaging in open.
5. Misses are +1 to time score. Procedurals are different.
