Appreciate all your input in advance. Not intending it to be a generic "what gun, or which 1911, is best" type of question, my question is very specific to a specific firearm and only for IDPA in particular.

I am in the process of buying a STI Spartan, it comes in 45 and 9mm.
I want to use it for IDPA, I know there are various divisions and the choice might have implications on which division is applicable.

I am currently considering getting the 9mm version for ammo cost and recoil reasons. I believe it can be used for ESP?
Any other concerns I should consider? Between getting the 45 version or the 9mm?

Thanks!

Hi

The STI Spartan in .45acp caliber can be shot in either ESP or CDP at the shooters option. The gun would be at some disadvantage in ESP due to the fact you would be limited to 8 + 1 rounds using 8 round mags.

The STI Spartan in 9MM plays is ESP Division and with 10 round mags would be a very competitive limited only to the shooters ability.

Of the two caliber options the 9MM would certainly be the least expensive to feed if you are buying commercial ammunition. If you reload the costs aren't that much different.

Whichever gun you buy you most certainly will have fun shooting IDPA. The IDPA Canada website has an interesting article on IDPA equipment. You might want to read that article as well.

Springfield makes the best 1911.

:p

Could I ask have you shot with either caliber? I have all but stopped shooting my 1911's in .45 and have gone to 9mm do to ammo cost, capacity and that dam arthritis in my wrists.

I don't see you being at a dis-advantage shooting a 9mm 1911 in ESP . There is a shooter at our club who has switched from a STI 1911 in .45 to a STI in 9mm and he seems to have had better success (novice CDP, Marksman in ESP), lower times, quicker follow up shots and they "seem" to be tighter groups.

I own 9mm and .40, would like to get into IDPA. As for .45 I have only shot other people's (1911), but really like the feel of the 1911 form factor in my hand.

Thanks!

As Bob pointed out, get the 45 for CDP and the 9mm for ESP.
The only things I'd recommend are sights you like (Fiber optics are a good choice), a mag well that still allows the gun to fit the box, and excellent quality mags like Tripp Research or Wilson's.
Good luck.
