and licensing is required to own it, does it become a restricted firearm needing a range to fire and registration, or can you still fire it on crown land where you can fire any other NR?

There are guys selling 44sp and 38sp re-worked antique SAA colts for thousands on the EE as well as .45acp Webley's .
I doubt they would get the asking price if they were not still considered antiques by "the man".
Man-o-man "the man" is a stupid man!

If it is pre 1898 and a acceptable caliber such as .45acp (etc) then no licensing is required to own it. Even if it has been modified to a "modern" caliber no licensing or registration is required and can be carried and fired where you can do so with a NR. Of course good sense and discretion go a long way as to legally enjoying the hobby.

Good luck :D.

have you read the firearms act regarding antiques ?

they have a list of rounds that can not be classified as antiques .

if your antique is not chambered in one of these rounds you are good to go .

I would post some links , but this has been talked about to death , repeatedly about every 2 - 3 weeks for years with very exact and detailed information being posted ...... so the search button is your friend here .

Just because it has been re-chambered to a more common caliber (.45acp) doesn't mean you can run off the shelf ammo through it. It is still a 100+ year old gun with the metalurgy of the time. Loads must be reduced to black powder levels to be safe.

I think the OP is more concerned with whether or not modifying an antique alters its antique status. I short, no it does not. However, as mentioned previously here changing to certain calibres may affect the status. Check the regs for such details.
