I was told today by someone within the industry that if I have a 14.5" AR and want to cut the barrel down on it down to say, 10", that apparently I can't legally do that.

True, not true?

I thought once a rifle was in that "restricted class" that it didn't matter what you did you it.

The above is an example only, I could want to cut a 10" down to 7.5" and the question remains the same.

If you cut a semi-automatic's barrel at all it becomes prohibited.
Don't.

BS. They gave you a PAL?

You cannot cut a barrel below 18" in length; no matter what length it originally was. Therefore you cannot cut any barrels that are less than 18" in length to begin with.

It only becomes prohib if cut to a length of less that 18.5". Even if it starts as 16" and you cut it to 10" its prohib.

You can cut it to any length above 18.5" and still be legal

Wrong. 18" you're thinking of semi-autos and restricted status. Jeesh people go read the regs again.

Don't.

If you cut it to a length of under 18.5" it's becomes prohib, regardless of what it started out as.

You're both wrong. What you cannot do is:

- cut a barrel (or stock) down to make a gun shorter than 660mm (26")
- cut a barrel down to less than 457mm (18")

You can cut the barrel of a semi-automatic, and you can cut a barrel to a length of less than 18.5".

As long as you do not break those two rules....

For example, you may cut the barrel of say... an XCR from 18.6" to 18". You would have to get the firearm reclassed as restricted though.

Actually, you're wrong too.

For shortening barrels:
For semi-auto rifles, you cannot cut it below 18.5" even if it already shorter that 18.5"
For manually operated rifles, it's 18" that is the shortest you can cut it even if it is already shorter than 18"
Pistols can be cut to whatever length you want, regardless of what length it started off as, so long as it remains about 106mm.

As an aside to the above:

As an individual (for yourself), you are legally allowed to manufacture a restricted-length barrel for any of the above mentioned firearms. So long as you manufacture it from a blank and do not cut down a pre-existing barrel. (ream the chamber last folks).

As a business (ie. for profit) you must have a Restricted Firearms Business License to manufacture a restricted-length barrel.

WRONG!!!

I'm going to ####ing scream people.

It doesn't matter what the action is, you cannot cut a barrel if it is less than 18"...period. If you have a barrel that is longer than 18" you can cut it down to 18".

If you cut a centre-fire semi-auto below 18.5" it will become restricted (you are allowed to do so though); you cannot cut it below 18" or it will become prohib.

I'm losing faith in humanity here guys.

How was I incorrect?? I said, you cannot cut them shorter than 18.5/18.
If it's already shorter than 18.5/18. you still can't cut it shorter.

Oh, that part, my bad

The point is if you have a barrel below 18", you can't cut it. Period. I guess you can cut it from 18.5" to 18 and it will be a restricted semiauto. Any less and it becomes prohib.

This entire thread is a perfect example of how confusing our firearms laws are.
Here we have various members, with between 300 and 5000 posts, all TRYING TO STAY LEGAL, but not quite sure how to stay legal.

I try to follow this stuff, and yet, when I wrote the Newbie FAQ Section, I specifically left out barrel length as I didnt completely understand it myself.
