If I cut down an existing AR barrel

Here's another glitch. Are the barrel lengths serial numbered and registered by the manufacturers?
If not, there's no way to tell if a smith has cut the barrel shorter and done it professionally. Will our government go through that barrel with high tech forensics? In the end does it matter if the gun was used in a crime and because the barrel is 2" shorter that somehow this is more of a felony?

Yes, our laws can be truly laughable.

BTW, if it's a chrome line barrel, don't waste your money cutting it down.

Cutting a chrome lined barrel isn't an issue. Chrome lined barrels are 'hard chromed', not like the 'show' or 'soft' chrome on a bumper. Hard chrome won't flake off when shortening a barrel.

It will still flake over time at the crown from my experience, but maybe some barrels won't.

The only reason hard chroming will 'flake off' is if it wasn't applied properly in the first place, in which case it can/will come off regardless of if you cut the barrel.

By any chance do you have any pictures? Not that I'm saying you've never seen it, but between barrels and dealing with hard chroming at work (machine shop), I have yet to see hard chroming flake. :)

Sorry, no pics. Just what I've seen from a borescope and what other smiths who showed me some scrapped barrels. I've heard it can be done with a proper carbide bit and might try it myself, but I have no test barrels lined up.
Frankly, I'd install a match barrel and throw away/sell the chromed lined barrel. That's just me saying money better spent. :)
