What would be the best choice?

I'm thinking of building a short barrelled ultra light weight .223.

I'd like something with a regular sporter contour, so I'm wondering if there might be something cheap around instead of having to buy a high dollar after market barrel just to build a franken gun that will probably shoot like crap.

I'm thinking .223 for a coyote gun... Would be neat to have a little 15" coyote gun.

I asked in the precision rifle forum as I would be shooting the heavier stuff with this gun (hehe)... HOT 90 grainers to 600 yards with my 15"!!! Plus, I figure more people might be "in the know" over here than in the hunting forum...

Sorry but 7 twist dictates an more expensive prefit from Shilen or McGowen.

If you can find them ER SHAW and Adams and Bennett were the lower grade, less money products. Working on supply but that might take a little time and I don't think they make any 7 twist pipes.

To be honest there are no 90 gr hunting bullets that I know of , a 1-9 twist would launch up to a 75gr bullet .
The best thing to do is try and find what is available for hunting bullet you can get and work around that.
Target bullets will not do a clean kill the animal will suffer more they are not designed to expand and kill they are for punching paper.

Okay, i'd be happy with a 9 twist... :)

Just needs to be 15"ish inches... :p

I would think a few of the people (Gunsmiths and Pseudosmiths) on the forum do enough barrel swaps from factory to match, they must have a couple of good used barrels kicking around that could be fitted and shortened to your needs.

Not legally. A takeoff barrel cannot be cut to shorter than 457mm, as noted above.

^^^^^ That's right you cant shorten it any shorter than 457mm ,you need to purchase it as a 15" barrel from a manufacturer in order for it to be legal.
And the firearm OAL has to be a minimum of 26".

You can take a blank and chop it shorter then 18 as per the sticky up top

Just finished reading the sticky and I'm not convinced to the legality of it to be honest.
As we speek I am starting to manufacture rifle barrels I had the cfo over here a few weeks ago to inspect my shop and am going through the hoops to set things up in a legal fashion.

I inquired about the legality of manufacturing barrels shorter than 18" [ maybe hit the ar market] , a barrel shorter than 18" needs to be made by a person who holds a valid manufacturing licence .

There was a thread on here lasdt year I think about a guy who bought a barrel of the EE that was shorter than 18" and was told it was bought like that from ??? I forget the manufacturer and had installed and registered.

The rcmp contacted him some time later and said that manufacturer never made a barrel in that length and they confiscated the gun.

I may be wrong but these are my findings after a bit of research on this subject.

BINGO - the barrel has to be MANUFACTURED for those lengths.

There are those that do rifle work that are licensed as gunsmiths. There are precious few that are licensed as manufacturers.

don't know how much it would cost but ellwood epps is a manufacturer.
this is from there site "Epps is now a Licensed Manufacturer for firearms and firearm components."

That is great news but they would still need to start from a non factory blank so that ups the cost.

Sorry, being a lic manf still doesn't allow you to chop a factory barrel under legal limits.

Stupid law, you better believe it.

But....

ATRS in Alberta can do it too. My brother is in the process of getting a 14" 308 put together. Probably not the cheapest option though.
