hey fellas, when on a little bird/moose/caribou/rabbit hunt today, pretty much looking for anything that moved and this is what we ended up with. that's me on the right with my hunting buddy richard. we where hunting about 100 kms east of Hay River NWT. We got the ptarmagins on Sandy Lake road where we have always had luck. We were driving down the road and saw a big clump of snow on the road and thought nothing of it. When that clump of snow started running away I pulled out my spanish sxs 12 gauge and richard took out his 870 and let the lead fly. These are tough friggin birds. they migrate down from way up north every year and have a feather suit of armour on and you have to hit them solid to fold them up. anyways not a bad day, we killed 6 of the first 7 birds we saw then came across a flock of 7 and only downed 1. 7 of 14, 50%, i'll take that, real fun afternoon though.

Good job northern hunter! Only shot ptarmagan once in my life, out near Churchill Manitoba on the Hudson Bay coast. Do not remember them to be all that sporting to hunt as they had the habit of running from cover into the open. My pal would pot them with a .22. Once these fellas took wing though it was a different story... especially with a tail wind!

Shot a of them when I was in Fort Mac. Got a pair mounted. Loved them because they were open into December and let me hunt longer -- much to the wife's displeasure.

they are not the smartest bird but we like to give them a fighting chance by walking up to them until they fly then start shooting, not much fun shooting them on the ground.

Saaaaaaa-LUTE! :)

good job, I would like to get a couple of ptarmigan for mounting . In southern saskatchewan I don't think I have a chance in heck though. haha
