If Savage brought out a newly designed lever gun, what would you like to see?

Full length mag tube flush with the barrel. Drilled and tapped top receiver side ejection. Call me crazy but I'd love to see a english straight stock in black and grey laminate with stainless finishes. Chambered in 45-70 and a few pistol cartridges. Decent adjustable sights standard not semi buck horn

Whatever they make, I sure hope its not anywhere as butt ugly as the 99. Function be damned, I throw up in my mouth a little each time I look at one.

Ditto, it's a very feminine looking gun, yet by contrast the Win1895 very masculine.

to have the wood actually be a part "of the action" was a monumental fail if you ask me. It just begs to develop cracks over time. Just an ugly design. Probably one of the best lever shooters out there, but homely as my 2 sisters.

Detachable mag-fed 308 cal. I think it <could> sell pretty good on a lever gun. Good enough for big game, and not such a PITA to load and unload.

I expect they will take serious note of Browning's BLR design, function and appearance, since it is, IMHO, the best 'bolt action gun' in a lever action available today.

So, to answer the question, I'd like to see a cross between a modern Marlin (in appearance) and a BLR (in function), chambered in a bunch of short action calibers utilizing a detachable magazine so any ammo would function. Yes, I would like it in 45-70 too, but this would require a different magazine configuration not likely compatible with a new design.

I know of what I speak, since I owned a 99e back in the day, but currently own a BLR.

Yea, I also recall mentioning to Savage that they ought to revive their Savage lever gun. Nothing wrong with a 308... Good for deer and moose. I would like to see it as a drop hindged floorplate, as there is no clip to loose. And the second choice would be a clip / magazine. Also, a raised comb to assist in using a scope; and a left hand eject model would be awesome. Laminate would be preferred with minor checkering for grip. a slightly curved lever that is large enough to accomodate a XL hand with a light hunting glove on. Tapped receiver for a scope, and a 23 inch barrel.

If they made a gun exactly like that, in 243, with a savage type price tag on it I'd buy one before it hit the shelves

Yes--exactly this, but with a black/grey laminate stock and a blued finish option. Solid peep sites with an attacable rail for optics options.

The world doesn't need another Marlin, Winchester, Mossberg, or Browning lever action...not to mention all the knock offs.

I think Savage should put modern technology to work and refine the Model 99.

Clip feed is fine, keep costs down! Make it capable of handling WSMs, too! Yes, a stainless version, as well as synth stocks! 20" and 24" barrels with no iron sights, optional for those who insist!

There are only God knows how many fans of the 99 around, why not re-introduce a completely modernized version of this classic and unique rifle!

Exatly right on the money.

With a long optics rail pre-installed, and quality aperture sights, big loop preferred.

I'd buy one right now!

But the point is, you can already buy stuff like this! What's the big deal about adding just one more of the same old, same old to the pile???

How many lever actions out there can handle a .270 WSM???

One, the Browning.

How many different designs of lever action are possible?

Basically, about 4. Winchester, Marlin, Browning, and of course, Savage.

Frankly, if there were another way to re-invent the lever action into something the market would accept and could afford, someone would have done it over the last 100 years.

What killed the Model 99 was cost of production due to its complexity. Certainly wasn't because people quit wanting 'em!

Modern technologies should be able to solve this problem...and make a better 99 while they're at it!

I see a Model 99 in .270 WSM, 24" barrel, nice and clean and reasonably slender with no useless iron sights, and maybe some fluting! Nice matte finish, or stainless. Clip feed. Quality synthetic stock, curved grip and 1" Decelerator pad, black...or maybe sand with black webbing! And a Leupold VX3 compact variable atop it set up in Burris Signature rings on Weaver Grand Slam bases.

Damn, who wouldn't want one of these!

:)

X2 on bringing back the 99. I have a BLR, marlin, m94 and a 99.
I prefer the 99 to the others.

In general, I would like to see something that addresses the shortcomings of some of the previous "modern" lever action designs.

-One-piece stock with comb height suitable for scope use
-Good trigger
-Easily field stripped to clean bore from breech.
-Open topped receiver so that the rifle can be just as easily single loaded through the top as by detachable magazine.
-Magazine length that is a good match to chamber throat dimensions.

While the rifle would primarily be designed for scope use, I would like to see a pop-up rear aperture sight like that seen on older Brno rifles.
