Looking at buying my first AR15 in .223 Not looking at building and don't need the best of best. So much to choose from and I am getting buried in research. On a $1200ish budget what is the one AR that is best bang for the buck? Is there like a 350 Chevy of AR15's?

S&W Sport 2 or Palmetto State Armory are the best entry level AR buys right now. Best bang for your buck by far.

At their price, it allows you to get an optic or case of ammo within your stated budget, and have a good quality firearm.

Or, pickup a used Norinco/DA M4 clone off the EE when they pop up for $400. A cheap way to test out the AR game without going down the tactical rabbit hole.

Well there are some nice entry level AR's as Shin_Gunto pointed out. However, the thegrandpoohbah isn't wrong on the current COLT models either (just don't get an expanse whatever you do!). Have a look around sponsors for current LE6920's or similar, they are the best bang for buck.

What's wrong with the expanse?

There's nothing "wrong" with the expanse (expanse II that is). Its under $1000 (barely ) at some places. Priced on par with the quality . You'll get better results with 62gr 556 than the M&P. But better results with 55gr in the M&P lol.

I have both. Nothing wrong with the M&P but the fit and finish on the colt is miles ahead . The colt is dead silent when you shake it , the M&P not as much.

At the $1000 mark there's not much that will surpass the colt for what you get . Lifetime warranty too and transferable.

+1 again for the M&P sport 2...

there should be a sticky for this type of question.. this is the third/fourth in a month now?

I think it gets asked so often because these threads usually erupt into people arguing about the "best of the best" ARs without actually providing information or answering the original question. I was reading a similar thread a few pages back and a member completely hijacked the thread bickering about what is or isn't a top notch AR. That member is now banned lol.

And for the OP, take a look at the Ruger AR556.
