...which one would you buy these days? With the obvious exception of an SKS, thinking a bit more modern. Fun shooting, reliability, and being able to hunt to a max of 150 yards being the goals.

Feel pretty out of touch with what is on the market these days, except the Bren. If your take on it is pretty much "hey man, I'd just slap an optic on a Type 81!" then cool! Hows that been working for you?

Consider the M+M M10X "AK" - style rifle which is now sold and warrantied by Calgary Shooting Center. It is about as modern as you can get....
Thank you! Will do. I know nothing about the platform.

The WS-MCR looks pretty solid?

My type 81 is fantastic

Oh cool, which version do you have? Got an optic on it, and hows the accuracy?

You might want to check some of the reviews on the M+M M10 before you buy first. Even the newest gen is a bit of a crap shoot although markedly better than the first few batches we got up here.

Those first batch guns were something else! I remember Canada Ammo had a pair they wouldn't sell because they were like 10"@100 lol

Were you on CGN to witness the debacle that was the M+M coming to Canada in the first place? It made me lose all respect for North Sylva...
I was, but I didn't follow it very closely. Sounds like a real poop show

Here is my thinking:
If you don't mind sticking with iron sights, then the Type 81 is by far one of, if not the best choice.
If you must run an optic, then get a bolt gun like a Ruger Ranch, Howa mini or CZ600.
If you must have a 7.62x39 semi auto and optics, splash the cash for a CZ Bren.

The M10x is too much of a crap shoot, even with decent warranty support.
Maybe people would be trying them on if they were reasonably priced for what they offer and considering their history.

Stay away from MickeyMouse M+M rifle. Like forget about its existence. It's abysmal rifle.
Bren is the best we have from modern rifles (but quite mediocre by itself in its Gen 2), however asspensive.
I would also not recommend to gamble with plethora of Canadian 180 variants.
Next in line after Bren would be reliable but very outdated Type 81. Because of re-use of trunnions for new barrels most of them suffer with misaligned trunnion so it takes patience and luck to find a straight rifle and then some efforts to get it scoped. And all of this for crappy 762 ballistic. Red dot or fixed magnification prysm is good enough unless you try to compete with it. Dunno if you can hunt with semi accuracy multiplied by 7.62 accuracy/ It's a proven design so unless you mess with it it will be as reliable as SKS.
To sum up - our options are effectively limited by ever evolving legislations and OIC bans and our options are very poor.

Normal SKS not modern enough? Then go SKS in an aftermarket stock w/ the XCR Mag conversion and magwedge rail! lol Poor mans T81, with easy to mount optics and mags that hold 10. lol

DLASK is selling NR Bren 2s in 7.62x39 with mid/long gas systems. You can use 10 round pistol mags with them. This is unequivably the best 7.62x39 rifle on the Canadian market right now. It has everything anyone could need.

The WK181 is the affordable second choice for getting all the modern accessories on (optics, slings, bipods etc) but is limited to 5 round mags

The M10X has an in country warranty support, buuuut between buying from them and buying a WK181 I´d lean towards the the WK181, the M10X has just been too much of a variable in my opinion, ignoring the past of it´s entry to the market the rifle is something I´d wait another year on to see if it really has actually improved. Oh and 5rd mags only

The Type 81 looks nice but has bad iron sights, poor accuracy and by the time you´ve made any and all changes to make it have bipods, optics, etc. on it you´ve spent a lot more than you would have on a WK181 or M10X which come with those options out the door. It also only has 5rd mags. You can really enjoy one of these if you like cold war aesthetics and appearences but from a functionality point of view it´s lacking.

SKS, it´s got ok iron sights, meh accuracy and is highly affordable. Optics mounting solutions are slim but for the price you can get a pretty capable rifle for $1000 or less all in. Stripper clips are slow and fiddly and 5rd capacity takes out the fun.

SKS is the "status" quo option man..... :) Might as well start with a classic and save some money for ammo.

The M&M's look nice and for what people want for a Type 81 I'd consider and M&M for a bit more money if I wanted a more modern option.

I regret not buying one of the original folder type 81's when they were around a grand..... people like making them look like AK's but I like the original look better.

For your use case (hunting inside 150yds) I'd just get a Type-81 and put an optic on it if you don't want to spend the cash on a Bren (which is hands down the best rifle on the market). A good side mount rail and optics mount makes for a solid optic setup on a T-81 and despite them not being very precise (3-4moa gun with surplus ammo) they're plenty good for hunting inside 150, probably shoot tighter with hunting ammo as well but I've never tried. You don't need to go all the way down the rabbit hole of changing handguards, etc if you just want to run an optic (but not a WML or LAM or bipod) For ####s and giggles I put a 2-10x optic on a Type-81 at one point and went 5/10 on a 2/3 IPSC target at 625 yds which was a bit of a surprise to me, given how the rifle grouped at 100, haha.

The M10X is just too much of a gamble, given how so many of the earlier gens are straight up non-functional garbage rods. Hopefully the latest gens are reliable and having support from CSC is great but I wouldn't be an early adopter...

The M&M crew have been at it for over a decade now.... at some point they might be able to get them to run and shoot as good as they look!

Hunting inside of 150 yards an SKS with a red dot on it would likely do the job for someone that struggles with iron sights.
