Illegal arrow kills deer

Victoria Times Colonist August 12, 2009

Central Saanich police are asking for the public's help to locate the driver of a truck seen in the vicinity of a wounded deer.

On July 26 at 11 p.m., a caller alerted police to a deer in distress near the intersection of West Saanich and Mount Newton Cross roads. The caller had seen a black Dodge Ram 3500 pulled over to the side of the road near three bucks in a field. One of the bucks appeared to be in distress.

When police arrived, they found the deer trying to escape on its front legs. Its back legs were paralyzed and a camouflage-colour "Terminator" brand arrow was lodged in its spine. Police euthanized the deer.

The black pickup pulled away before police arrived, and the witness reported that the male driver appeared to be speaking on a radio or walkie-talkie. He appeared to be the vehicle's only occupant. "Obviously, this is somebody at night cruelly shooting a deer," said Const. Janis Jean. "It is illegal to discharge a bow without a permit and it is illegal to hunt at night."

Bow-hunting of deer is only allowed during daylight hours and permits are only issued to farm-status residents in Central Saanich where deer are destroying farm crops. Jean said no permit was issued for the property.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Const. Dan Cottingham at 250-652-4441.

Another poacher. Hopefully after the Saskatoon duck poaching incident, the public will be a touch more inclined to call in with tips.

I don't think we'll see a tidal wave of news reports about poachers, but a seed has been planted in the public awareness...

You call the ministry of natural resources, they will give you a number of a farm agency who will issue you a permit to shoot what is eating your crops.

"...illegal to discharge a bow without a permit..." That's nonsense. No hunting without a licence. Nothing illegal about Terminator arrows either. The rectal orfice might have had a target point on it though. Not that it means the guy isn't a poacher.
Mind you, if the intersection is in town, it might be illegal to shoot a bow. Bows are covered by most municipal 'no discharge of firearms' by-laws.
