Hello all. Just checking as to why scope manufactures are making illuminated reticles on long range target scopes. Is it necessary. I am looking at getting something for long range target shooting, and i see a pile of them have illumination. Just wondering why?

So you can see the small aiming points when shooting distances probably past 600 yds or so .... and, especially with etched FFP ... you pretty well need illumination shooting past 800 ... and, especially for people with eyesight difficulties ... keeps your groups smaller Doo

I have had no experience with more recent illuminated scopes, but the ones I had looked through seemed to have much heavier reticles than those without illumination.

Because some use these scope for long distance hunting as well.

Nothing like illuminated reticle when the light outside starts to dim.

This, especially in cheaper scopes on “beater guns”. Just an illuminated Center dot is a great help. FFP at low mag in a thick undergrowth scenario, same deal.
