Either you love 'em or hate 'em but I know there's a ton of good stories and pictures out there.
Here's a few photos to get us started. Most of these feature myself and my fellow Iltis owner 86iltisamb.

Here's my girl with her top off

Coolness. How easy/difficult is it to find parts for these bad boys?

Parts are pretty easy to find, at least easier than you think, and most of them are generic VW and Audi parts. One of the best things is these were built very robust and if you take care of them you won't have a whole lot to worry about. There's a few websites out there and eBay always has a lot of stuff. The Iltis community is probably one of the best sources, but it can be difficult to tap into. One of the hardest things to find is tires. I have direct contacts with Michelin and the military and still no dice.

When I had mine, I installed Goodyear Wranglers sold at Canadian Tire. They run great on the highway and off-road....

.....like them so much I but them on the Pinzgauer.

They look pretty decent. I have to say I'm a huge fan of the military tires, but I might have no choice but to go with something commercial. Did you have any issues with them rubbing in the wheel well?

The newer Michelin military tires are supposed to be good, but hard to get, if available at all. The older "happy face" Michelin tires are crap on wet tarmac and most are to old to be trust worthy (my spare in the first pic).

They only rubbed at extreme turning, which I rarely ever encountered. I was put onto them by a guy out west and has been running them for a lot longer and tried other models.

That's good to know. I'm probably ok for little while, but I'll definitely need to replace them before next winter. There's no way mine will be any good in the snow next year, and driving in the snow is half the fun of an Iltis! Having said that, tires chains are pretty handy to have too ; )

My Pinz came with chains, but I have never put them on.

I joined the Ottawa Valley Off-roaders this summer and we do some great trails. It would be nice to see something other than jeeps!! ;)

cool thanks, but what are they worth?
im a mechanic so the fixing of stuff means little, all my labour anyway

I paid $6500 for my Iltis. That may seem high, but for a vehicle that was 27 years old, it was in excellent shape. Many Iltis were driven hard and they sat, so they tend to rot out. I was advised to spend as much as I could initially to save in the long run. If your goal is to acquire a pure bush buggy, then you may not need, or want, to spend as much.

I also wouldn't say parts are easy to get, as most in Canada are held by one or two sellers....in Edmonton. Check out this page http://www. iltisforum.com. You can also get them on eBay from Germany (VW Iltis stuff), but it isn't cheap and shipping will get ya.

Believe it or not, getting Parts for my Pinzgauer is easier!

By the way, here are searchable PDFs of the many Iltis related DND manuals.

I've owned mine (CFR 86419) since April 2012 and love it, especially with the tarp off in the summer. Nothing better than taking the kids for a ride on a warm evening. It spent its entire life in Manitoba, starting with 2PPCLI in 1985 and surplussed out from CFB Winnipeg in 2005. I'll dig up some photos and post them later.

The truck came to me with 2 uni-directional Michelins up front, 2 omni-directional Michelins on the back and an omni spare. But they'd seen better days so I swapped them for a set of slightly used Uniroyal Laredo HD/Ts (225/75R16). They're a bit noisy but the ride is good and I don't get rubbing unless I really crank the turn.

The person that finds a reliable source for 6.5R16 tires will make Iltis owners very happy. I kept the old tires in case I want to do an authentic 'dress up' or a parade, but long-term and highway driving on that old rubber was asking for trouble, IMO.
