Anyone know what the going rate for a 1985 CF surplus Iltis is? Have a line on one and was wondering what I should consider as a high price and a low price. Iltis is in good condition with only a slight exhaust leak. Comes with the soft top.

I know someone who bought an Iltis 4 years ago for $10 000.00. It was in good mechanical condition but needed some body work to fix some rust perforations. I think that was factored into the price.

Well, then don't charge him too much for taking it off his hands. ;)

No, sorry, I don't really know. If you get it I hope it turns out to be enough fun for what you pay.

The going rate on kijiji seems to be in the $4-6k range for driveable cars; beaters and parts cars going for $750-2500.

If you're paying 10 grand for an Iltis, it better be in pristine, restored condition, with a pristine, restored trailer full of parts!

I've been toying with the idea of picking one up myself. For $5k, I'd want a road-worthy car with top and doors that needed only minor fixing. Let us know how you make out.

Personally I wouldn't pay much for one. Parts could be a problem though I have heard the power train is Volkswagen manufacture. Don't know if that's true or not.

Dont forget the iltis is now a collectors item as of 2010 it is past the 25 year mark .

Um, yeah. Cars are only collectors items if people actually collect them. Just being 25 plus years old only makes a car old, not necessarrily desirable. Four door sedans (and others) may qualify for collector plates but still have no value other then parts. A good example? 55-56-57 Chevies are among the most desireable and valuable of old cars. A nice four door specimen is still cheap enough to use in a demolition derby, collector plate and all.

The Canadian Iltis' tend to be quite worn and rusted. There's a place on the West coast that sells the German Iltis, which was pulled from service much earlier in its shelf life, and may be in better shape. The Germans go for about $10K, I wouldn't buy a running Cdn for more than $2-3K (parts are not super day to find, and will only get worse, plus many have body issues). And definitely DON'T buy the Iltis that I "sunk" back in 1994 :)

Another thought if you're buying the Iltis.

As I understand it, when we (Canada) purchased the production rights from VW and started producing them at Bombardier, we also decided to convert the original diesel design to gas. This lead to nothing but problems with the fuel system... It may be an idea for you to pick one up and convert it back to the original VW diesel design. It would make for a much more robust and dependable system.

I have two friends here on base that just picked up one each from a dealer in Ottawa.

They didn't pay much more than $8000.

Now that was a dealer selling them in surprisingly good condition who knows what a private seller would let one go for.

My one friend swears by it, says with a skid plate it's a hell of a bush basher.

I don't know jack squat about vehicles though.

Just bought one out in B.C. for $4500. Generally speaking in good shape. Parts are not easy to find out here though they are around. There are lots of commercial parts that you can substitue and information is available. Look at the Yahho group forum for lots of great advice and help.
I am somewhat mechanically challenged but having a lot of fun fooling with mine. A military vehicle was a bucket list wish of mine and I am glad I took the plunge...

The iltis I own was a unit from nova scotia 5 MP with 23000 km no rust no problems with the gas system but I did remove the mesh balls from the gas tank as soon as I got it home they are known to break down over time and clog the fuel system . The CANADIAN ILTIS is a collectors item to anyone that collects MV'S and are getting harder to find in good condition. IN QUEBEC your looking at 10000 plus in mint shape.I saw one iltis with a hard top selling for 12000. last year I was offered 8000 for mine at a car show and refused the offer.I paid 5000 for mine in 2007 .

Be careful. There are a couple here in alberta that are allways up for sale because they dont have serial numbers, hence cannot be regestered for on road use. be careful what you buy. What was funny was one of the ads said right on it that it could only be used for private land only. so it sat around for a long time. If I am wrong I stand to be corrected, but getting a MV has allways been on my bucket list as well.

Damm my brother and his 45 willys.
