Did a back to back comparison. My absolutely bone-stock untouched 2013 M305 22" barrel. Winchester Super-X 150 grain ammo.

Yesterday I shot the 8 shot group with the rifle as it came from Marstar. This afternoon I shot the 5 shot group after swapping out the op-rod spring and spring guide with S&J Hardware's products. I know, 8 shot group versus 5 isn't really a dead perfect comparison. Close enough. Moral of the story, this Norc has potential.

Interesting test. I wouldn't have thought that the Op. Rod Spring guide would have made that much of a difference but in your rifle, clearly it does. Now lets see how some reloads improve your groups. Potential certainly seems to be there!

Speaking of silly results. In researching good loads for the M14 I came across the old standby of 41.5 grs IMR4895 under a 168 match bullet @ 2.800". It was the same for everyone, 41.5 grs. Everyone said it shot the best in their M14. So I figure its worth a shot but what are the chances 41.5 will be the perfect load for my M14? I loaded 10 rds each from 40.0 to 42.0 in .5 gr increments and shot two 5 shot groups for each load. 41.5 grs was the clear winner. Its not science, its just magic.

Funny. I tried that classic load in my rifle trusting that it would shoot. I used it untested in a range qualification and boy was that embarrassing. Shot no better than 10" groups at 200 and larger at 300.

After more load testing, 39.5 gn of 4895 shot the best but 39.5 gn of IMR3031 and 42.5 gn of Varget routinely get me under 1.5 MOA, and often sub-MOA. As said...it is magic...voodoo.

Distance was probably about 75-80 yards give or take. Slung up and sitting on my ass. I'll start handloading for it, when I've got the rifle how I want it. I'd like a NM flash hider and front sight, a NM rear sight, and bedded into a USGI fiberglass stock. And it still needs the typical tweaking and tuning that a Norc needs. Tightened up I guess.

I have to agree with you on that one. Tried the same thing ...

That is really interesting. I don't have IMR4895, but I do have H4895 and wonder if the same will hold true.

Will have to give that a try.

80M to sling sitting on the floor
very very beautiful shot
I hope you go to register in milshoot
because with it, I can not imagine the performance when you have made a change a few parts and bedding
you will inevitably well placed
I bought my the op-rod spring and spring guide in m14.ca
I should take them at S & J Hardware's products
change is obvious and much better

Good point, I should have clarified. I have tried it with both IMR and H4895. My personal results were best with H4895 and I like using the Extreme powders where I can for their temperature insensitivity. I just wished they metered better.

Thx for the Clarification!!

I will try that

As for metering, that's what and RCBS Charge master is for!! ;-)

You know, I wouldn't be in a hurry to do anything with that rifle,,,if those groups are repeatable, just leave it, don't even disassemble it,,it doesn't get much better, it's tuned now,,

Does it ping? If so, leave well enough alone inside for now. All m305s can benefit from better sights though. Handloads are the best accuracy improvement.

It does ping. But I can't resist tinkering. It got it's NM rear sight today. Six round group. Guess it's time to start hand loading now.

you got the jackpot with this M305
I'll agree with those who you do not touch the moment the gun
is it possible for you to pull over 100M ???
it'll be interesting to see à200m dispersion and +
this proves that Norinco may be able :)))

I'm going to have to try that load again in mine, when I first tried it I was still using the original plastic stock and 40.5 grains of H4895, (didn't have the IMR 4895 but I understand H4895 is virtually the same/ very close to the same?) was much better than the 41.5 for me. Now with the wood stock may be the other way around?
