I'm getting confused.

I loaded up 9 shots for my .308 with 40.0 grains, and 9 shots with 42 grains of powder. I wanted 6, 3 shot groups to determine what charge I'm going to use since they both shot well the other night. Well my first shot from a cold, clean barrel printed bang on, 2 inches high. The next 2 were slightly to the right, and an inch higher. Not bad I figured. The next 3 would have been a half inch group if I hadn't of pulled the shot, and it opened it up a bit, but I called it and knew I buggered up. But after those 6 shots everything went to Hell. My groups opened right up and started printing around the target. Some to the left, some up above. I'm pretty sure my scope is fine, but I'm thinking it's very suseptable to a dirty bore. My next trip out I'll bring my cleaning gear and clean every 3 shots. But here's the kicker, I also loaded up 3 165 SST bullets in front of 40.0 grains, and 3 in front of 42 grains. The 40 grains looked like crap. The 42.0 grains was another story. 2 shots went inside each other to look like a figure 8. The 3rd shot disappeared, and I had no clue where it went. When I pulled my target, there was evidence in the wood the 3rd bullet went into the same hole as one of the other bullets, just a bit off, but I couldn't see it on paper. It was the damndest thing, and now I've got to load up a bunch of the SST's to see how they shoot. But if I can consistantly keep that first cold clean shot 2 inches above center, I may have the perfect rifle. But damn is it finicky. This is getting expensive. :runaway:

Screws tight? Mounts tight? Bedded? Any forend stock pressure will change POI when bbl heats up.
In my rifles that exhibit exceptional accuracy, stout/max charges produce best results.
Try to duplicate the results and see what happens with the accurate charge.

I love when guys complain about having to shoot their rifles...:kickInTheNuts::p

yeah....I hear ya....a fellow recently questioned what the throat life of one of my 7 stw's might be...I replied that I would love to find out.....they make barrels and new rifles every day...:D

I would personally love to toast the throat out of my 22-250.....on gophers...he11...I'd do it in one day if someone could hand me the ammo fast enough...:)

Finicky is not perfect. A good rifle will shoot any reasonable load well. I wonder if after your half inch group if you simply lost your concentration. Something changed, so either the environmental conditions changed, something about the rifle changed or the nut behind it, or the consistency of the ammo changed. Once you break it down, you'll figure it out.

Boomer just said much of what I was going to say.
Bottom line, a well tuned rifle, which basically means proper bedding, will shoot all descent ammunition well. And, it will keep its point of impact as the barrel warms up.

Have to ask.... what rifle? and have to agree with Boomer. sounds like concentration was just lost for a bit. doesn't take much some days for me, so maybe others as well?
just try those SST's again. I like them for many many rifles and loads. depending on what you plan to use that 308 for, you might also look at barnes. i have had great success with their 168 gr TSX bullets.

Sounds like bedding to me. Wood stock? The barrel may be touching the stock as it heats up. Or the action may be moving in the stock.
How much time are you waiting between strings? Let the barrel cool between strings.
You need to work up the load from the starting load, not just pick one or two and hope. I'd figure why it's not giving a consistent POI first though. Mind you, when you're hunting, you'll be shooting with a cold barrel.
"...went into the same hole..." Entirely possible.
