I'm jealous of our southern neighbours.

I frequent the surplusrifle.com forums. Lots of guys have been talking lately of the great deals they're getting on Enfields, sounds like some of the U.S. surplus dealers (Century Arms etc.) have truckloads of No. 4s.

Anyone else jealous?

What are they paying there?
I can run down to the local gun show and pickup unissued Irish contract Lee Enfields with matching bayonets for $275, no taxes. They can do better than that?

I had a chance to buy some of those Century No. 1 and No.4 rifles, I cancelled my order bores were dark, wood was poor and bolts were mostly mismatched.

German Stuff To

Hello,

I would just like to say that the price for German Pistols and rifles is alot cheaper up here than it is down there.

I bought 2 P38 matching rigs for the price of one down in the states.

Cam

I was at the Rodchester gunshow a few years back looking at enfields when the dealer said "aren't they some of the nicest you've seen" I almost laughed but he was serious I wouldn't even bother to scrap most of them plus he was asking 2-300.00USD each .well I politely answered no and went home to the land of the enfield feling a little sorry for them if thats all they could get BTW they were selling and most seemed to have gone trough India (screw in front of trigger guard) plus look at all the garands that came here instead of to the states (not allowed back in)they were a sweet deal.

I tend to agree Cam, but it's not about price...... :)

It's about availability of decent collectible grade material at all.

I can't speak to German pistols, as I don't collect them, but show me ONE Canadian advertisement anywhere, for an "all matching" and "all correct" 1934-1940 German K98k and I'll buy it in heartbeat.

There's a lot of RC's and post war re-builds, plus several 1941 Obie's made for the Portuguese around, but not the German factory pre-war and war built pieces. They're on GunBroker, and Auction Arms, or available through private sales from BBS places like GunBoards in the U.S., but not here in Canada that I can find.

.......... or, perhaps I'm looking in the wrong places in Canada. If so, I'm open to being pointed in the right direction, so help me out folks.... :D

BTW, here's the ONLY "all matching" and "all correct" German military used K98k that I own at this point, manufactured in the first year of the war. Notice the detailed match of the components and particularly the fonts used. This was an early 1939 rifle, so there was a lot of attention spent on details and parts marking. The later years, ie: byf 1944 were less marked, but there's a great Collector Grade Publications book, called "Backbone of the Wehrmacht (The German K98k Rifle, 1934 - 1945) by Richard D Law", which shows what should be marked and with what WaA numbers on all individual components for each manufacturer and by individual year.

Southern Ontario - like my profile says?

Thats what I paid for my Irish contract. I was looking at a couple of others last gun show and the guy is getting tired of carrying them around, told me quietly that he'd sell for $275 to move them. All matching of course with bayonet. Not in the wrap or grease, with maybe some small handling marks in the wood.
I'm tempted to buy them all, probably a good investment.

Well then we are neighbours:D
How about you tell me where the next one is and I'll meet ya there:p

By the prices on the EE forums here for minty LE's I'd be thinking about buying them all too.

"...bores were dark, wood was poor and bolts were mostly mismatched..." Very likely to have bad headspace too. Century doesn't known what the term QC means.

I would buy one like that for a reasonable mark up to make it worth your time and effort. :)

Surplus deals here in the US are some times over-rated. Nice Enfields can be found but they are starting to get pricey. Rosses here in complete shootable condition are almost non-existant at many gun shows and hard to find for decent prices any more. The occasional good deal pops up here as they do in Canada but the glory days of WW2 and earlier surplus are long gone. I do love my Ross No.1, Mk.II*** rebuild though! Joe
