Hey all I got the stupid question of the day. I'm looking to cast for my 4570 and was on factorysales.com and they have a lee sizer for .457. Is this the size I need or do I need one to .458 size? Its a hunting gun not a target gun so 3" at a 100 yards is all I need
 
Go with 459,you gotta start somewhere.
While your ordering from them get a couple different 45-70 mold's to play with.
At their price's who wouldn't.
 
I have had best result in my Uberti Highwall and Ruger #3 .45-70's with cast bullets sized in a .459" sizer... I started with a .458" and can say in my rifles .459 works much better...
 
The Lee .457 Molds will usually make .459-.460 Boolits

I usually buy from Factory Sales but what I recommend you do for a sizer is call Lee and ask them to make you a custom .459 one. I have one and it workms great for my Pedersoli .45-70s
 
I use .459" on mine and most others, but have sizers to do most anysize, if you can't slug your barrel, I'd suggest .459". Micro-groove barrels may require bigger(.460-.462"), the only concern is if your mold won't drop them that wide. I realize that you are not looking for top notch accuracy but bullets that are not a good fit can/will cause leading and could turn you off cast, like some others....IMHO in guns like the 45/70 cast bullets can be pushed at least as fast as jacketed if not faster, with as good or better accuracy, and usually more effective on game, but the bullet must fit right and prolly use a gas check for those speeds.....Ben
 
Thanks for all the responses. I'm just piecing everything together and want to cast for the 4570 once its warmer. My gf has parrots and I have fish so no way I can melt inside. Just thought I'd order everything now. Ill call and see if they will make me a .459. I didn't think the smaller would work thanks
 
No reason to be embarrassed. In reloading, the only stupid question is the one unasked - the one that has bits of your receiver embedded all over the range.

I shoot my 45/70 as cast out of the lee molds. I don't gas check them and only Liquid Alox them and then push them at 1200 feet per second. Works without sizing for me. I have the Lee 405gr, 450, 500fp and the 500gr pointed. Fun times!
 
What gun?
Levers have to have flat point only, in the tubular mag. H&R buffalo classic can use any of the above. I really like the 500gr bullets. They leave the gun at 1200fps and are still doing 835fps at 1000 yards. For hunting I would use the 405 grain flat point. They say you can eat right up to the bullet hole!!
