Ok gang, I need some help.
I'm looking at a new non restricted option in 223/556 on AR mags to go keep my tavor company in the bush.
I've been pondering the ACR and the XCR and frankly I'm stuck and I cant make up my mind.

The most important things for me are: accuracy, reliability, durability, and ease to take apart for cleaning.

Accuracy:
Id like something that shoots under 3 moa without using 2$ a round ammo, I will 90% shoot 200 yards with it.

Ease of maintenance:
I want sonething that is as easy to clean as my AR or my Tavor.

Reliability:
I cant stand FTF, FTE, Double Feeds, stuck cases and light strikes, using regular AR mags.

Durability:
I want a real firearm not some little toy that breaks when you handle it too roughly.

I understand the challenges of turning the ACR into non restricted, and thats ok, Ill play with it in restricted mode for about 6 months then Ill send it off to Herron for a non restricted job, thats not an issue.

So my question is, is it really worthwhile for me to find a new ACR somewhere, then spend another 1200$ bucks into turning it into non restricted status as opposed to just buying an xcr and be done with it right away.? What are the merits of the ACR over the XCR out of the box?

Hey Mike,
ACRs are rarer, more expensive and heavier than a keymod XCR-L. Accuracy is better and possibly reliability ( if you happen to get a lemon XCR). Adding the NR conversion will increase the cost and wait time.
XCRs are generally good out of the box. Both rifles are long compared to your Tavor. If you want a bush gun, the Tavor beats both in dense bush. If plinking on open terrain, then no issues.
Tough call. Go with your gut, wallet and patience here. Have you handled either of them?

I'm in the same boat Mike (except I don't want the XCR). I have been craving an ACR with a Herron conversion for a long while.
It will be quite expensive when it's all over but if the accuracy is there then it makes it all worth it.
I will be keeping a close eye on this thread and expect CR5 to chime in in 5...4....3..

I have shouldered an older xcr-l at Wanstalls (the one with the quad rails) and I wasn't a fan, mostly because of the rail and the trigger, thats why I thought maybe the new keymod one will satisfy me.
Ive never shouldered an acr but I have read all the hype and reviews.

The wife has commandeered my tavor lately and she wont shoot anything else, so I need a new rifle for when we go shooting in the wild.

There is a keymod XCR-L as of last Thurs at the new Siwash Sports in Chwk for about $2300.
What didn't you like about the quad rails and the trigger? I had the XCR just before the keymod one and I handled the keymod version. It's definitely lighter but the trigger feels the same. I actually like the XCR trigger. Very comparable to my AR Geisele one.
By your description of your experience with the XCR, you may actually have subconciously answered your own question!

Hows the accuracy on the new xcr-l?
Ive never been a fan of quad rails, I like round easy somewhat skinny hand guards, something that helps in pointing naturally, I have small hands.

I'm trying not to be biased and lean towards the ACR, most importantly since I have never even shouldered one, which could wind up being a dangerous buying decision, thats why I need some help from owners.

The keymod will be right up your alley. Skinny front! Since no picatinny rail, will need an attachment to mount lights etc.
Accuracy wise. Fair to middling with 55gr AE. Shoots about 4 inch groups at 100m for me. But I'm not a great rifle shot. Mine had a few FTE and FTFs also but it's barely been shot before I sold it, about 200 rds if that. Don't use a single point sling if you are less than 6ft tall. The gun will drag! I assume the same for the ACR. I just found the rifle too heavy to lug around the bush! I have a Tavor too and it's the best compromise for the .223 rd IMO for what you want to do. Even with the stock trigger, I love it!

XCR over the ACR only due to better availability.

What are your thoughts on the T97? Seriously.
If you are ok with irons, you can get away with the same mags an ammo as the Tavor.
I found the iron sights better than I would have imagined.
If She falls for it, you van get your Tavor back and please her with a can of pink Krylon alll at once.

Sold my t97 after 6 weeks, I was utterly not impressed.

I dunno, I'm still stuck on this conundrum. ACR sounds like a 12 month project, xcr ready to go out of the box.

I went with an ACR simply because of the accuracy and caliber change ability for hunting big game. I had a bad experience with a non keymod XCR so I would stay away from those.

Since you are staying with 223 the only thing really is accuracy and how the gun fits you to consider IMO.

I hear ya buddy. I haven't fired an XCR-L but did handle a heavy bbl version. It was ok but not for me. I have however fired the XCR-M. That was badass!!
I really prefer the look of the ACR though.
The ACR is certainly gonna be harder to get.

Cant speak for the ACR, but I think the XCR l is a great rifle. Havent had a single problem with mine yet and is just as accurate as any AR I have.

Guess what I'm going to suggest. ;)
ACR is superior to the XCR in every way except parts availability, but I have ordered spare parts and if you're patient you can get them.

You can pick up a lightly used ACR for around $2000 and be non restricted with a Herron Barrel for another $1000ish. There are other options which will cost you less but Ian probably puts the nicest one together.

If cost isn't a concern then go with the ACR.
The XCR is a good rifle but still needs some improvements to compete with a non restricted ACR.
ACR is worth the extra money in my opinion.

Accuracy---> ACR

Ease of maintenance---> ACR

Reliability---> ACR

Durability---> XCR

Extra category: WEIGHT---> XCR

This is based on my experience owning both.

That said, XCR still meets all your criteria for each category, so basically it will do what your asking AND be durable. AND lighter. AND slimmer.

I sold the ACR and I still own the XCR. YMMV

Don't get the XCR. If you do, you will enjoy it so much you will have to get on CGN and participate in the same threads over and over, debating the guys who never owned one, but continually tell us all how bad they are....It is good reading though.

still no loctite joke about this xcr ....

someone could buy the xcr and with the difference of money put a good optic on it or just buy more ammo ....
