I had the 222 out at the range after mounting the new Falcon Merlin 4-14x42 and noticed something peculiar. My best groups were with a hot barrel, not a cold one. This runs counter to what I have read recently. Anyone else have a gun that does that? The barrel is not free-floated, but completely bedded in true 50s fashion. Maybe it had to heat up to expand into its bed??? dunno

not hot or cold but it must be the same temperature every shot. It is impractical to shoot cold barrel all day - mean you will have to wait 5-10 minutes between shots. If you shoot twice and then start giving similar rest periods than rifle tends to group nicely, mainly because of repeatability of conditions.

I think you,ll find that when it was finally sited in the barrell was pretty warm by then.
If your gonna site in a gun that'll get very little continued use then site it in cold, leave some cooling time between shots.
If your gonna site in a gun that will be getting continual match shooting, get it warm before you finish adjusting it.

Was this a barrel warming up issue or a case of the rifle shooting better after some 'fouling' shots ? I find a number of my rifles shoot better after some rounds have been fired and the barrel is somewhat fouled - not dirty but not clean bore either.
