Here is a fine custom rifle...in .458 Lott! Take of that sissy slip on pad and touch off a full power round. Ouch.

Thats one heavy hitter  ,imagine a 500gr bullet with over 6000 ft-lbs of muzzle energy  I'm afraid my frame would'nt take it.......well atleast the follow up shot

we had a client this fall show up with a .458 Lott. I was very disapointed when I did not get him the day he shot a moose with it.......

you want a real heavy hitter? check out the specs on a .585 Nyati....

Imagine the recoil on THESE!

The last issue of African Hunter magazine has Part III of a series on big bore cartridges. Part III starts at the .505 Gibbs and gos up to the 700 NE and has recoil comparisons. (I guess the rounds discussed in the previous sections don't kick enough to mention.)

Here's a few of them, listed as calibre/bullet weight/velocity/rifle weight/ recoil:

.505 Gibbs/525/2350/12lbs/84 ft.lbs
.
.505 Gibbs/600/2400/12lbs/106 ft.lbs.

.500 Jeffrey/535/2400/10.5/77

.577 NE/ 750/2050/14/95

.577 Tyrannosaurus/750/2500/13/172

.600NE/900/1950/16/104

.600 Overkill/900/2400/14/189

.700NE/1000/2000/18/115

The final sentence of the article says, "No matter which of these the reader may choose, I can assure you that the .375 H&H will have absolutely no felt recoil after a range session with your new big bore!"

True, I guess you'd feel no recoil after being battered unconscious.

but a "fine custom rifle"...I beg to differ

Can you imagine the fun a fellow could have at the range? Here, check out my bubba'd M98, its a really honey to shoot! :D

To me,a BIG bore rifle that kicks hard,Is my 45/70
I can't imagine that any of the calibers that 'josquin' listed would compare to the 45/70 for that matter. But DANG!!!! that 600 Overkill with 189lbs of recoil  ,Thats like having a fella the same wieght, running at you and drop kicking you in the shoulder.......of course there are some sadists CGN's out there

Yesterday I spent some time at the range. I fired 20 rounds of .338WM, all off-hand practice. I also fired 5 rounds of .416 Rem Mag off the bench. To be honest the shot that was the toughest, was when I laid down and fired the .338WM from prone position.
I also fired 15 rounds of .270Win but that thing is a mild 14 ft/lbs. of recoil; I know this from previous calculations; nobody wants to hear about 14 ft/lbs. of recoil anyway...

Remington Model 700 .338WM
Calculator:
Bullet Weight - grains 225grs
Muzzle Velocity - ft./sec. 2800
Powder Weight - grains 67 grs IMR-4350
Gun Weight - lbs. 7.25

Recoil = 39 ft.-lbs.

Brno ZKK-602 .416RM
Calculator:
Bullet Weight - grains 350grs
Muzzle Velocity - ft./sec. 2560
Powder Weight - grains 82 grs RL-15
Gun Weight - lbs. 10

Recoil = 52 ft.-lbs.

Brno CZ-550 .458 Lott
Calculator:
Bullet Weight - grains 500grs
Muzzle Velocity - ft./sec. ~2200*
Powder Weight - grains ~79*
Gun Weight - lbs. 10

Recoil = 69 ft.-lbs.
* These numbers are estimates based on data from Hodgdons 6th Edition.

My .458 Lott brass is in now and I intend to start loading some up. I've got a couple of cans of H-335, which looks like a pretty good starting point. I also have 500gr Hornady Interbonds and solids. I am hoping for 2200 fps MV with both. I think that will be a nice load.

For my .416 I am going to start working with 400gr Hornady Interbonds and solids also. I haven't had any success(accuracy) with the 350gr Speer Mag Tips.

At the moment of truth, in a hunting situation who remembers recoil? Recoil is stressed way too much in my opinion. I wish people would talk about other things frankly...

My only experience with relatively heavy recoil is my 45-70 and a few rounds from a .338. However, as another poster suggested, in a hunting situation one tends not to notice these things. I only weigh about 160 lbs, so shooting a .600 Overkill would likely be pretty distressing (!!) but in the face of a charge from an enraged elephant, I'm not sure I'd turn one down if that was all there was to hand, given the quincequonces. As it is, if I do make it to Africa, it will only be for plains game, so such behemoths (the rifles, that is) can be, as they say, "for the eyes only."

Shooting my 505 Gibbs is not really painful. more like a big dog or truck jumping into your arms!! But I do not shoot it of the bench!!

I like to hit what I'm shooting at , be it a target or critter! :D

I also like to enjoy shooting.

I could not gaurantee EITHER with that thing!!

I'd rather kill a critter at 2,300fps and 140 grains out of a 10lb rifle , than scare (and likely wound!) BOTH of us at at the same velocity and 450 grains!!

OUCH!is right....

SC - it is for sale...in France.

Demonical - it's not just talking about recoil, I think it is a very interesting big bore. As you can clearly see, the stock is designed with the correct amount of drop to ensure comfortable shooting. I wonder if the metal butt plate is still on underneath the slip on pad. I used to have a Rem 700 Safari Classic in .416RM and it wasn't too bad. Until around the 10th shot off the bench. Some black bears and one wild boar fell to that rifle. The results were very impressive bang-flops.

The most impressive kill I have ever seen was my first moose, which I hit right at the back left rib, on a shot that angled to the off-shoulder.
At the impact that bull literally jumped in the air, turning 90 dgrees in the air. It then fell straight down, all 4 legs thrust out vibrating. It slammed to the ground like that and the legs were stuck straight out quivering for at least half a minute before the nerves subsided. It was amazing!

And that was with my .30-06 with 180gr factory ammo, I cannot remember the brand now....

But I'm looking forward to the .416 Rem and the .458 Lott when I get to use them on game!! :D :!:
