Let the debate start, unless someone can explain.

I say "Hit" when I watch someone shoot at a target. Recently I took part in an Outlaw Rimfire shoot and spotters where saying "impact".

I know both work but to me hit seams to be the more accurate word.

While I have no knowledge what "Outlaw Rimfire Shooters and Spotters" might do or why I can posit a possible reason.

It situations where voice communications are restricted or constrained in some way it's often useful to use a word, or words, that are unique enough so they can't be confused or misunderstood. "Hit" is a short word that rhymes with lots of other words - might make it tough for the person tallying the score, especially with everyone wearing ear protection.

I agree with aglo.

'Impact' is distinct enough to distinguish the word from other conversations, and gunfire from other stages.
I was at a PRS shoot recently in the US, and there were two Marines in my squad, and they yelled 'Biscuit' for every impact.
Was funny at first, but it later made it very easy to know that it was our squad making hits.

This. Under ear protection “hit” can be mistaken for “miss” more than one thinks.
