I think that you are splitting hairs between the two you mentioned. I personally think the Cadex Sheepdog may be a bit more robust than the Impact and the fact that they are made here is a bonus incase any issues come up. Having said that, I just started a build on a Cadex Sheepdog myself in 260Rem.
Not sure why a Cadex Sheepdog would be considered more robust than an Impact.
Biggest difference I can see between the two actions is the bolt throw. The Impact is 90 degrees while the sheepdog is 50. Keep in mind, the shorter bolt throw has to do just as much work but over a shorter range of motion (compressing the firing pin) and that will show in the bolt lift/close. I've never handled a sheepdog so I don't have an idea of how stiff it is.
Lots of good reports about the Impact - people love them. They are designed to handle challenging conditions without skipping a beat. Good CS, and the tennon threads are cut to such precision that shouldered barrels are available and can be made without a gunsmith seeing your receiver - that's definitely a big plus for some.
Out of the two, I would personally go Impact. I don't really see any features on the sheepdog that would make me pick it over the Impact.
I’m leaning towards the impact. I I currently have a bighorn tl3 223 which is sweet. As a complete rifle I’d prob go for the cadex. I know they are supposed to be top notch and the short bolt throw is real nice. The impact tho has a slight edge here in my opinion so far.. the scope rail killed in the receiver just like the surgeon 591 actions.
I tried the Impact and I was pretty sold, next custom build that will be the way I go. I really wanted a control round feed though and I don't believe that's an option currently with the Impact but not a deal breaker anymore for me. I don't have any experience with the Cadex.
have 2 complete sheepdog rifles I should list, a 6.5cm and a 6.5 by 47
nice actions and the bolt throw is good, and Canuck made. The impact is also nice
Call blue chip precision and ask him the features of the sheepdog, he speaks very well of them and I cannot remember the details but was impressed with what he pointed out that I have 2 complete rifles and 2 actions for builds, but can’t seem to find the time to get out,to shoot
Both are quite nice but they are not really in the same price range. I think you can get a barreled Sheepdog action for not much more than the price of just the Impact action. Have you thought about the bighorn Origin? or the ARC Nuc? Both of them are more Cadex Sheepdog price territory but 2 or 3 lug designs if you are after something in particular.
I had a R7 for testing for a bit and it was quite a nice rifle - the bolt lift is heavier (it has to be for the very reasons Kthomas mentioned) but it didn't seem to affect my barricade shooting at all.
The impact is a nice and smooth action the couples times that I have got to play with them.
We shooters are lucky these days - lots of great options out there.
I already got a bighorn tl3 and it’s superb. Controlled round feed. Fixed ejector. It’s real nice. Defiance actions are nice but the bolt can feel sticker I would say. Impact is at the top of the list for me so far. Arc doesn’t interest me so much.
I would go with the Impact. If you are able to handle one I think you will be sold on it
They are smooth as butter, run in dirty conditions, come nitrided, has a trigger hanger, integral lug and rail and tolerances are held tight enough for prefit barrels
I've owned and handled several custom actions and I really like the Impact
I would handle the Cadex before you bought one. I've read those who cycle bolt don't care for it at all compared to other custom actions on the market right now
I have played with both and I would go impact hands down between the 2 they aren’t even in the same league. Not to say the cadex is a bad option. The cadex I did play with was on display as a bare action at the Calgary gun show and I have handled a couple of impacts and they have all bin very smooth with light bolt lifts including mine. The impact is made to such consistent tolerances that there is a lot of reputable gun smith down south that will spin up prefits and insite up here in Canada will as well. Just my 2 cents
