Book Report time. For some of you who don’t believe I was a Professional Edumakator for 30 years, I am now gonna sound like a Teacher....

Here is a picture of my draft copy....do I need to tell you why I have a draft version? It’s because the UBC Facutly of Ed program directors tortured me with Literature, Prose, Short Story, and Poetry courses even if I was a Science Major. For that, I am eternally grateful. And I have a few red pens around the desk. LOL

So here goes the report!!

A new book to prepare for PR and PRS contests has been published and is up for sale at Amazon dot com (yeah we are aware that dot com and dot ca are 2 different beasts)

I am officially adopting this book as a reading textbook for my PR courses because we have never had a book available for beginners and intermediate shooters alike. If I could write a book of all my PR course compilations , this one would be the one.... Rodney’s writing style mirrors my teaching style and approach. He is extremely informative and light hearted at the same time. Rodney quotes from several sources and experts. These quotes allow you the budding competitive shooter to explore other sources in order to advance your knowledge base.

For those of you wishing to springboard into the PRS world , this book is exactly what the Tactical Teacher ordered. You will not be disappointed and better yet, by having a resource like Impact! on your bookshelf you too can counsel new shooters and appear to be the expert. What’s not to like? Time to help others and pay it forward. :p

Here is a synopsis from the author:

Are you looking to get started in long range or precision shooting?

Impact! is an entry/intermediate level guide to preparing yourself and your equipment to compete in precision rifle type matches or just become familiar with long range or precision shooting. Topics covered include:

-Setting up your rifle
-Understanding ballistics and how to collect, record, and use ballistic data
-Techniques for using holdovers, reloading, clearing malfunctions, shooting off of barricades, and more
-Effects of wind and other variables such as air density
-How to improve your wind calls
-Tips for live fire and dry fire practice
-Preparing yourself and your equipment for a match
-Mental strategies and techniques
-Rifle, optic, and equipment selection

Everything is clearly explained in simple language and illustrated with numerous photographs.

Also included is an extensive glossary of terms used in precision shooting and a list of additional resources you can use to further pursue your precision shooting knowledge.

At the back of the book you will find several pages where you can record data about your rifle, scope, and ammunition as well as wind observations and holdovers, plus a handy list of unit conversions.

Here are the details so that you can order your own copy:

I love this book so much I sent a copy to CANSOFCOM in Garrison Petawawa through Callsign22 for their perusal since a few of their tasked LR shooters wanna get in on the fun.

You all knew as a former edumakator I would be encouraging you guys to read....well we are here. A book for
LR shooters....

Cheers.

practice shooting from the roof...if your neighbor dont mind hahah :)

Rod wins all the local matches. Looking forward to learning a few things from him.

Books are great and all, but you are going to learn a lot more by just going out and shooting matches. Your learning will explode. Everyone tackles a stage differently. It all depends on your gear, your flexibility/fitness, your body type etc.

At a match you will see how a bunch of different people tackle different stages, and you can then apply what you see and find out what works best for you.

All too often people won't shoot a match because "they are not ready" - those people NEVER shoot matches, you will never feel ready. Go out, sign up, and shoot a match. You will learn about 10x more by shooting it than by reading any book, I promise you that.

Another great resource is to go down to Rifles Only, K&M, Core Shooting, etc. - they have course that are designed around new people getting into PRS shooting. They will teach you different techniques shooting off of a barricade, movers, stage, prep, etc. - and you will be able to try out a bunch of different techniques and strategies with guided professional help. Nothing beats time behind a rifle.

For 2018, go out and shoot. Doesn't matter if its a local club match, or a national level PRS/NRL match. Last place at a match still beats number one on the internet.

I plan on attending some matches and am planning on constructing my own 1000 yard steel range.

Is it ok if I buy the book as well? Laugh2

I agree...a common conversation we bounced around in the barracks at Connaught Ranges during our Service Rifle weekends with the ORA over the past 20 years was entered around how to crank up the levels of participation. We brainstormed for years and with dynamic programmes based on community focused matches that had a continuum to provincial and national level intensities....

We started dialing up the involvement levels in CQB matches and these matches reinforced fundamental skills for SR competition. These CQB matches fed or led CQB experts to try Service Rifle. Our numbers in the ORA speak for themselves today...

Now we have that same opportunity to venture down a very similar road. PR matches lend themselves for developing skills that springboard into PRS matches and of course, road trips!! What’s not to like?.

Now that I’m in the sunset of my shooting career it’s time for us master riflemen to put back into the community!

Oh poop, Rod I might have to buy 20 books for my PR clinic 24-25 March 2018, I’ve just received the thirtieth paid up shooter's fees....i’ll Send ya a message....

Now to work on a KY Jelly Sponsorship.......

Cheers

Sure, buy whatever you want. Your money. Whether it's a good way to spend the money or not is up to you to justify.

Thanks for the heads up. I wish you had posted before I ordered. Might have to put my range plans on hold now.

I bought this book to support people who take the time to write down some bits of wisdom about the art of shooting. In the unlikely event I learn to run around and shoot like PRS I will also have one less excuse LOL !

PRS is difficult - attended CORE Training center in Florida with Nightforce and the instructors are top-notch. I would not have had any "impacts" on roof if it wasn't for ex-Marine Corp sniper putting his foot behind mine to keep me from sliding off! And there was a shoot where you can't see target but it can be hit with proper use of reticle - zero hits! Did OK from tower - resting on deck upright after first shot was on wrong target. At prone and longrange did well but on rapid fire did not keep head down. Frig- hard to teach old dogs new tricks but certainly was fun and educational. Again, instructors are down to earth with no B.S and if they did not know something they said so - refreshing.

As has been mentioned before, books are good, videos are good, and courses are good. However, there is no replacement for trigger time.

With that being said, I have guest passes to my range (Calgary Area) and anyone who wants to try PRS style shooting let me know. My instruction comes at the pricey cost of $0.00 (OK if you want to buy me a timmies you can do that too).

The most important thing to me is seeing the sport advance.

I think what some of the seasoned shooters are saying, and some newer shooter are not understanding, is that yeah, anyone can get behind a rifle and put rounds down range. Are you going to pick up some tips and tricks? Sure, maybe. Will you learn some bad habits or poor shooting technique? Probably just as likely.

I think a book for a beginner is a great idea. If it helps them to avoid some of the mistakes that most of us have already made, why not?

One other great resource that has just been released in the past couple weeks is from the owner of JC steel, Jake Vibert. Jake is a very accomplished shooter in the US. His videos go through a ton of great info for both new shooters and experienced ones as well. I am about 60% through and have picked up a few great pointers and had some fundamental stuff reinforced.
If you don't have the time or money to travel to k&m or core this is a great alternative. The other nice thing is you can rewatch it as many time as you want when ever you want.
For 70 us this the cheapest training you can get.

I will also say go shoot matches. I firmly believe this is the best learning you can do, but a little prep goes along way when you just drove 6+hours to get your ass handed to you.
