They are decent mid-quality shells from the few I've shot. Not special, or long range, just OK shells that will do most jobs OK.

The new Imperial shells are a throwback to the old ammo that was sold back in the day. From what I've heard, they are manufactured by Challenger. The original Imperial shells had that half brass base. But the new shells apparently use the standard high brass used by challenger. I believe I read that the brass is stamped Challenger as well.
I didnt like Challenger loads very much and would prefer the Federal ammo

They work fine, from my experience. Challenger seems to have bought up the "Imperial" trademark, including box design and text. The Imperials from 20-40 years ago also said 'special long range' if I recall. They were also the only brand of shells that just claimed "max" drams equivalent of powder instead of listing a real number.
It does kind of annoy me that they come in a box of 20 instead of 25. I'm all for buying Canadian, but if the Federals are cheaper, I'm grabbing them!

The head stamp is challenger and it's made in Canada. I've never had an issue with challenger ammo. Canadian tire seems to have the exclusivity with Imperial.
Perhaps they wanted a reliable manufacturer to be able to keep product on their shelves because of the logistical problems with US suppliers...

OP - FYI, I recall coming across a recent thread (can't remember whether it was here or another forum) where a few folks were surprised to discover that new boxes of Imperials contained a mix of birdshot and slug etc.

Yep and if you are anything like me I think I smelled way too many over the years at least that is what I tell my mrs caused my brain damage

One benefit of the Crappy Tire / Challenger arrangement (that I haven't yet taken advantage of) is that for the first time in MY LIFE, I noticed CT carrying 28 gauge shotgun shells! Lead target rounds of course, but still.....

I grab these at gun shows when I can.
Getting a few rounds stacked up.
Dad back in the day bought the 2 3/4 magnums and I still have some marked Special Long Range.
